46" short deck or 50" tall deck

I have acquired recently both a 46" short deck and 50" tall deck , I was looking on opinions on which delivers a better cut . I have only mowed with each one time so I don't have a strong opinion yet.

I have a 46 deck and not really happy with the cut, I will have to find the thread to speed up the pulley if there is one. What don't you like about the 50 I was going to go that way.

50" hands down. The 50" aren't as common as the 46" ones are and the 50's have a much better cut/suction because they are deep. They are a great deck, I would keep the 50 and sell the 46. The 46 has the worst cut of the 3 decks available for those tractors.

I figured that everyone would lean towards the 50" from reading but like I said I don't have enough experience with either to make a good decision

50 inch. I had a 46 inch deck on the 317 and I've used my aunts 318 with a 50 inch deck. In comparison the 50 inch deck does much better. The 46 inches dosent do as good of a job as dispersing clippings or it sometimes gets clogged up were as the 50 inch does much better. Go with the 50 inch deck.

I noticed that my 50 deck left less uncut grass where the front tires ran over the grass, due to the better lift the deck gets. There is a speed up pulley for the 50" deck, too, which provides even more lift. Watch out for dirt piles though, haha.

I have both decks and have been happy with both. I don't cut tall grass with either, so I could have a different view if that were the case. The 46" has high lift blades on it.

My 46 with Powerflo and 50 without are pretty close in short grass, but the 50 beats it hands down mowing tall and thick grass. Neither has the speed up pulley and both have Gator G6s.

Take it off. Makes a big difference cutting long thick grass or grass that has piles of dead clippings on top of it.

My 46" mows great on my yard with the G6's. It did a good job on a field before them with old OEM Blades also.
Sorry no pictures of fresh cut lawn, only the field.:hide:

When I bought mine, the chute was long gone. Just using standard blades. I think making sure the deck is level, sharp blades, and speed impact cut quality the most.

Here is my opinion on them. First is the new replacement deck. Second is the 50in high lift deck. Third is the 48in deck. Fourth is the 46 in deck. I have never used the 38 in deck so cant say one way or the other on that one for the 318. Just my opinion your mileage may be different........................KJD
