Well, I went to move the mower into my workshop to tackle the pto bearing job and it wont start !!

spins over like crazy but wont start...so I guess my first thing would be to make sure its getting gas and spark.

My question is I think I left the key in the "on" position when I parked it last week....would that kill the battery? More importantly, would it burn out the fuel pump.

I bought this tractor last weekend and aside from the bearing squeal it ran like a top.

The best way to check to see if the fuel pump is working is to disconnect the fuel line where it connects to the carburetor. Next turn the key to the start position. You should hear a few clicks if the pump is working. Fuel should run out of the gas line.

Fuel line is orange in the pic below.

The manual states the amount of the fuel the pump should pump in one minute.

If the previous owner let your Honda sit for awhile it could be something as simple as a complete or partial clogged fuel filter. If there is no fuel being pumped through the gas line, then next step is to remove the fuel line ahead of the filter or remove the filter and see if it pumps gas

I would install a new fuel filter regardless. It doesn't effect performance to add a small second fuel filter into the line just ahead of the carburetor.

Like I said...it ran fine when I parked it...I think I left the key on for a week
:ditto:Like Dlandsv said, as you wanted to know, that will instantly tell you if it is the pump or not. Next, check the fuses and I believe there is a troubleshooting guide in the manual as well.

If it cranks over the battery is not dead. Pull the plugs, put them back on the wires and set them on the head. Turn the engine over and you should see spark at the plug electrodes. If no spark ignition problem. If you have spark put plugs back in engine remove air cleaner and put a little gas or engine starter in the carburetor. If the engine starts and runs briefly you have a fuel delivery carburetor problem.

also on 92 and later there is a Fuel turnoff electric valve at the bottom of the carburetor ...

mine went bad last year... if bad NO gas to carb.

the earlier than 92 also has a valve but it works different than the newer type.
read the manual for this.

and like a car.. leaving the KEY ON.. is not good.. just like your car.

Well, I went to troubleshoot the mower last night, turn the key and it fired right up.

Thinkin' maybe I flooded it last time..? I do remember smelling gas last time.

I will give it a shot tonight and see what happens.

I wish every fix were this easy !!

Maybe so? Sometimes I think my 4514 has a mind of its own..... I would still change the fuel filter just for good measures. I've had to replace the carb solenoid on mine 3 times since it was new. It could also be that your cdi was acting up. They are known to give problems on the 4518's.

but it is not a 4518, however a 4514 has fuel pump control either in the combination relay which controls carb solenoid or early models in fuel pump module. fuel filter should be changed at least once every 20 years, but clean fuel will go a long way to having no problems.

:ditto: and my bad I thought the title said it was a 4518.
