Hey guys, this machine been the biggest pain! We got it after another guy took me and the "loose bolts" turned out to be a blown original engine. We found a 170 engine and got it in. This engine sat in junkyard for a while and had some issues with stuck exhaust valve and such. You all may remember my numerous posts on it. This month was not my best so far, a lot of personal issues. Thought I got this starting issue licked. It would backfire through carb and finally fire, choke seemed of no use. We swapped the igniter and coil out and cleaned carb three times, with Sea-foam through system. It acted better with warmer weather. It is back to hard start, and noticed a lot of blow-by. Any ideas where I should go next ,other than a bonfire!? Dad and neighbor spent over an hour using plasma cutter and hammer to get rr tire/wheel off that was frozen on. Thought we would at least get it done for the neighbor!

This one ,I thought the gas was out, it still had enough.

Well, I'll tell ya one thing, your starter works! :)

I dunno what to say, Eric... On the starting problems, you checked that the choke's actually closing all the way, eh? I don't know the fc420s very well, and I'm not NEARLY an expert on engines to begin with... Hard to tell from the video but it SEEMED to run alright once you got it going... Until it stopped that time, anyway... Fuel pump pumps okay?

Have you checked the compression,is this the motor that had moisture in it?have you checked for the plug fireing?its got to have, spark, gas and compression and it will go.Just re read and saw it has blowby, check the compression, moat likely it will be low.

:ditto::ditto: also, have you made sure that the flywheel key isn't partially sheared?

Thank you all. LTG, choke is correct,he cleaned carb and swapped it out. Biker, think your right. The exhaust valve was stuck open. I totally forgot that! The flywheel key is good. Dad worked on it today. I will check compression when able.

Let us know what the compression is!

I will Brandon! We are going to junkyard this morning. I will look for two engines, maybe bin this one. Been rough hobby month, don't want to do it much anymore.

I seldom work on Kawas although they are excellent engines. I had one last year that did not want to start. Upon examination, I found that the choke plate had two large holes in it. I put a short bolt washers and nut in one hole blocking it and took care of the difficulty in starting.

Walt, might be the issue! Will look into that and fuel pump to see how it is pumping! I think we did, but a while ago!
Well guys, tested the compression a few times with throttle at full!
Tested at 80psi all times! Forgot to get oil into for another test!
It fired right up after this. Went to film it and this happened!

Brandon, been a lot of issues this month with my job. My bosses son came down on me for using Facebook while waiting for work van oil change! Caused a big fight and hurt feelings! I worked there for almost 20 years and kid don't trust me. His father seemed to go on his side, which I would not blame him of course. I am looking for a new job. Then my best friend who is my immediate boss is quitting over this issue as well. Rough trying few weeks. Then hobby took a turn for worse!

Compression is excellent! I actually had a kohler command motor that acted just like yours, it turned out the fuel pump was weak. After replacing it, it fires right up just like a new one!

Compression seems to be fine, have you tried fuel directly into the carb?pull the fuel line off the carb and drop it into a container, pull the plug wire and crank the motor over to assure the fuel pump is pumping adequate fuel supply AND check the pulse line from the motor. It does sound like fuel delivery IF there is spark.

FB is fun but has caused a LOT of issues in the internet world since all your comments are shared to all your contacts, all you can do now is go forward and use this FB lesson to your advantage.I finally just shut my FB page down, dont really miss it.

Thanks guys. On the Facebook thing, boss has issue with me using it even though his van was on lift. I never use it on company time! Lack of trust and micro manage! Guys, I got pumps. I'll swap it out and try it!!

Well you guys were right on!! The fuel pump was weak!! It fires much better and on quite a few tries!! Now to change the starter, dad says the teeth look bad. The carb seems to load up on idle, can see the smoke in blow by still of course. This engine need a good workout I bet!!

Woohoo! Problem solved! I bet you probably feel a lot better now with one thing off your mind. It would probably be easier to just change the gear on the starter unless y'all just happen to have another good starter laying around. Put some sea foam in her and run her four an hour or two, that ought to help a lot after a long winters nap.
