I'm going another route. Instead of paying $288 on machine work I was able to trade a little bit of my time to help someone fix something and in trade I got a real nice K301 block that doesn't need any machine work, only a refresh job. I've never paid more than $150 on a Cub Cadet in my neck of the woods and often times I find them TWO for that price. It's just not worth it to me to spend almost $300 on machine work and another $100 on a rebuild kit on an engine that's going into a beat up old tractor that I got for free. If I go that far I might as well restore the whole thing but that's not going to happen because it's just a fun little machine to me, not my livelyhood.
Then again, that is just where I stand now because I have a lot of other things going on but I think in the future I'll take your advice and do a full restoration of one of my old Cubs just so I can have one that's not always down for repairs every other year.
Even though I found an alternative route to go, thank you for your time and advice.
:howdy: 288$ for machine work? What are they doing for that much money. Here in NE Indiana, i get a block hot tanked and bored for 50$ and a crank turned for 50$ and thats at the most respected automotive machine shop in NE Indiana. :smilie_fl

Where did I say that??

OK...for the 3rd time...
Evidently, you guys read what Ya want ta read in these posts

it was $288.00 TOTAL!!!!
Machine work, parts, gaskets, & resurfaced head, bore, hone, tank the whole shootin' match...........total
And $19 of that was TAX!!

He asked for peoples thoughts, and I offered...

I give up.......................

:howdy: Read the 1st line of his last post. (Instead of paying 288$ on machine work). Nothing about 288$'s being the total for parts and machine work.

Technically, this is only your second time of mentioning $288 was the total for EVERYTHING. When you first mentioned it to me you only spoke of how much you were billed at the machine shop for parts and labor.
You said, "I just did a AQS321 and total bill for parts (stens) & machine work was $288".
The "I" part indicates you yourself assembled the engine so I imagine you bought the rebuild kit yourself to save money instead of having a shop buy it for you. You then said the total "Bill" for parts and machine work was $288 indicating that is how much the machine shop charged you TOTAL.
I know if I took a block to a machine shop, had them do say, $100 worth of work, and then I took the block home and assembled it with the parts I ordered myself, I wouldn't add the cost from the machine shop, plus the cost of my parts I ordered myself and say, "that is how much I was BILLED".
Do you see how someone could find what you said to be slightly confusing?

It's not that we, "Read what Ya want ta read", you write what you want to write and expect others to know what you're talking about.
Nobody's mad at anyone here, we're just trying to figure each other out.
Thanks for voicing your opinion on the matter. I'm always open to suggestion.
