I know all the Home Depot models I looked at had K46. I was led to believe by the Cub dealer that their KW models were no different. It was either that or jump to the shaft drive GT. They really need some middle ground options.

That LTX 1054 was a nice tractor. For its size it's a shame they couldn't put something other than a K46 in it. I woulda bought one. The JD D170 was no different. Nice big tractor with large rear wheels and a K46. :dunno:

I guess nobody makes money of cheap lawn tractors that last 20 years. They want you to buy a new one every few years. My dad bought a new JD 116 in the 80's with a 5 speed transmission and it lasted 19 years until it burned in a barn fire. It was bottom of the totem pole model and still lasted a long time. Not so much anymore of either brand.
Cubs use a variety of transmissions and it varies by year as well. My friends has a hydrogear, the very next year the 1046KW had a K46 TT... I don't know what is in it this year. Cub still makes a pretty stout GT... which is not available @ retailers. The Cub lawn tractors though, even the ones available in the box stores, are not bad mowers at all, and actually can be quite reliable if you take care of them.

I have changed my mind, and decided to get the cub LTX 1046 KW rather than the X310. I take great care of my equipment, and my MTD is now 16 years old without any problems. My only reason to buy was because I wanted a 2 blade deck rather than a 3 blade 46". I also think the K46 will be fine for my needs, and the K58 (made by the same TT mfg) is overkill for me. The X310 deck is 42", which is 4" less than the cub, turn radius on X310 is 22" compared to 12" on cub, and the cub has 4 anti-scalp deck wheels compared to 2 on the JD. I am sure that the JD website shows 4 deck wheels, but apparently photoshop was done to simply put the 310 sticker on a 360, as a 310 with 42" deck only has the 2 deck wheels. The cub also has 3 more HP than the JD, and I am sure the FR Kawa will more than meet my needs.
Obviously the pwr steer and hyd deck lift would be nice to have in addition to the K58 tranny, but I think there are a lot of K46 units in use without problems. The cost difference is significant and even in the worst case - I could put in a new K46 if I ever had a problem after warranty, and still be dollars ahead compared to the X310. Also my current snow blade will hook right on to the cub, but a JD blade would be around $650. Anyway - while I have not pulled the trigger to buy the cub yet, that is what I plan to do next week.

Well best of luck to ya. I hope it does last a long time.

Of course there's a lot of K46 units working without problems. But they won't keep working without problems for 16 years. They are a low cost short life option. As long as your aware and ok with that then you won't be disappointed. I won't comment any further on it, but the only reason I'm adamant against the K46 is you plan on using that blade on it. Guy on JD forum killed a K46 at 120 hours using a blade. If you were only mowing it wouldn't be such a big deal

Pauli, I have a 2011 LTX1046KW, mine does have the HG transaxle. It has about 140 hours now, and has been flawless, and does cut very nice. I had a JD prior to the Cub, the dealer actually came out to my house and said all you need is a L120, and took my old Craftsman in on trade. Well, the electric PTO went out 1 month after warranty, almost $350 to repair it which included pickup & delivery. I went thru an air filter every 25 hours, changed oil every 25 hours too, terrible air filter system, when I was done mowing, I'd be covered in dust, grass covered up the deck. I change oil once a season now, about 50 hours, and I changed the air filter at 100 hours. The Cub is so much quieter, and no dust to speak of. My wife says the Kawasaki motor sounds as quiet as a vacuum cleaner. To some people, green & yellow paint is everything, but I'm quite happy with Cub yellow, good luck with your purchase, I'm sure you'll be very happy.

Made a flip flop and changed my mind again over the weekend - signed papers this morning to buy the JD X310 with blade, bagger & mulch kit. The only deciding factor was in the stronger tranny, as the cub had several other features that I considered to advantage the cub. I know the pwr steer and hydro deck lift will be nice, and I did not realize until this weekend (and confirmed this AM) that the snow blade is also hydro lift.
Anyway - I bought the 2013 with one piece hood which I also consider better than the 2014 with 3 piece hood. The dealer told me that the bottom tuck on the 2014 will actually rub enough to hold the hood up at about 45 degrees when closing it, and the JD is a decal instead of on the yellow plastic. They deliver this week, so will have to try it out!

The dealer just delivered my new X310, so thought I would post photos. I will have to modify the blade to add the rubber edge similar to what I did on my other blade. Just wanted to share photos while it was new and clean. The mower deck is inside my garage, as I don't want it on with the blade since the hydro lift operates both mower and blade.

Very nice Pauli! It should serve you well for many years. How do you like it??? Post a review on the JD forums :fing32:

I used to think that the cub was superior for the price. But, since I now own a JD, I've changed my mind and believe it's more than just about the paint. I'll probably never buy another Cub since they've continued the downward spiral. Fortunately, I've got a welder and am able to preform my own maintenance.
