Hello guys,

Got two question about the G10 transmission.
First, when I put new oil in the transmission (via the oil fill plug), I couldn't get more oil in there than about 75% from the amount of oil that manual tell you to put in. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? (and yes, I was doing it on a flat surface).
Second, when I want to shift to the next gear (for example from 2 to 3), many times it won't go directly into the next gear and I have to drive a couple of inches to put it into a diffrent gear. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with the gearbox?

Thanks in the advance :trink39:

On the oil fill I can't help you much. Did you check it again after you had ran it for awhile? May have had a bubble somewhere or perhaps it did not drain completely. When I changed mine I just filled it up and it's not gone down since.

The gear change problem is not typical with how my G-10 behaves but the previous owner was a helicopter mechanic and had built an all new shifting mechanism outside the transmission. Said the original linkage did not work to suit him. My G-12 tends to hang up once in a while but not every shift.

Bolens transmissions can be a little tricky to shift, sometimes you need to press the clutch a couple of times and go in another gear before the gear you want. And remember DON"T GRIND THEM.
Yeah, thats exactly what I mean! Sometimes I have drive a few inches or I have to press the clutch a few times. But is tuis normal? Or is it because of 40 years of wear and tear?

Yes, typical straight cut gears. Most you should have to do is wiggle the tractor back and forth with you rocking it sitting on the seat. Usually I shift into another gear and then back into the gear I want selected.

As for filling, drain all the old oil out the drain plug and then fill it to the height of the fill plug with 80-90w gear oil and you should be good to go. The trans is a big empty case filled with gears and shafts so no worry about a "bubble" or filter on a G series Bolens.

If you do not fill it full eventually you will get a high pitched squeal from the bearings of the gear cluster on the top shaft not getting any oil. The gears sling the oil around to lube everything up and if it's low it will not reach the holes in the gear cluster to oil the bronze bearings riding on the shaft. If you go long enough like this you will need to remove the top cover (not that fun of a project) and pour gear oil over the top shaft and manually lube it, then fill it to the top fill plug level and off you go again :)

Something to be aware of.

DO NOT USE the 'latest spec' gear oil/lube.

The current stuff has additives that do not play nice with bronze.

You need to find some that does not have those additives.

Someone at your local tractor dealer should be able to help you find the proper lube.

I filled it up to the fill plug hole. According to the owners manual you should put about 2.5 quarts of oil in it, but I couldn't get more than 1.9 quarts in it...

@OldBuzzard: yeah I know about the new oil. I put a special 'classic' EP90 oil in it :)

My G10 does the exact same things your does. Some days its a bit dodgy shifting gears. I just shift to a new gear and go back to the one I want. Same thing on the oil. After replacing all the oil seals mine leaks out the top where the lid is. I have to make a new gasket for it. Be careful with the drain plug. I have the worst luck with both of my tractors. The plugs won't budge and they get rounded off trying to remove them. Same with the plug on the mower deck gear box.......aaarrgggghhhh!:fing20:
