Many of the newer Kubotas have the over running clutch built into the tractor and any of the hydrostatic transmissins would work because you don't need to push the clutch to stop the tractor. The hydros also work good if you want to back into an area with the mower because you can keep the mower turning as you stop and change direction.

I would hang on to it till you see what you buy to replace the kubota, its still a very good mower deck, you just need the machine to run it. The PTO shaft mount clutch is like $55 at our local TSC, I looked at them tonight when I was getting dog food and a new SMV triangle for the seat back on my B6000. I myself am plastering every tractor forum with a want add for a RM42-KB and I am willing to pay to have it trucked to me. At least we are not in a hurry to get the mower, when I find one, I will buy it. I am watching your auction Rhonda. I bet it sells in the end, I am guess its near your reserve now. Mike

OK, everybody is indicating CCW or CW rotation and how that is a problem due to a worm gear in a 90 degree gear box and not wanting to drive power in reverse. However, looking at the photos Rhonda posted, I don't see a gear-box, but rather it looks like the PTO shaft connects to a pulley, driving a belt that makes the 90 degree turn and then to a standard mower spindle.

I don't see any reason that this can't safely and easily run in reverse basically forever. :thThumbsU There is a problem with the blade mounting I will mention below. Worst case would be that for some reason, the bearings in the spindle wouldn't hold up and they would need to be replaced, but that should be less that $30. There is a problem with the blade mounting I will mention below.

So now the 2 problems people keep mentioning. Overrunning clutch and blades. First the overrunning clutch isn't to keep from damaging the mower or PTO system. It is to keep the stored up energy in the rotating mass from pushing the tractor through a fence, etc. even with the clutch pressed in. I know that there have been many tractors such as the Ford 8N that were run with mowers for their entire life without such a clutch and nothing was ever torn up. Whether Rhonda can do the same will likely depend on how many obsticles she has to mow around, but for an open field, shouldn't have much problems.

Now for the blades. Looking at the 3rd picture in post 395, the blades aren't held tight by any bolts at all, but rather, pivot in place on the bolt (it looks like the one on the right is missing. Most (all?) brush hog blades are kept extended through centrifugal force (centripetal if you want to get technical :lalala:) and this allows the blade to basically stop if it hits a major obsticle without breaking anything. With the welded up spacer on the right side of the blade mount, running in reverse rotation, the spacer could prevent the blade from stopping and try to keep pushing it through, and consequently breaking something.:crybaby: It looks to me like all that would be required is to grind out the spacer and reweld something similar on the other side of the blade mount and then grind an edge on the other side of the blade. I know because of the reverse blade angle it won't give as good as results as you may want for a finish mower, but I haven't gotten the impression that this would be an issue in this case. If you don't have anybody locally that could do this simple mod, I am sure that there are plenty of us (including myself) on the forum that could help out.

If others see a problem with what I have said, speak up, we don't want anybody getting hurt. :Stop:

Rhonda, it looks to me like you are 99% of the way to having a successful build-up. If you like the tractor itself, don't give up now. If however, the whole experience has left a bad taste in your mount, and you want to get rid if it no matter what, I can understand that too.

schmart, you live close to our new place in Kokomo! She could still pull it off, but I myself dont like not having the clutch, espicaly in an emergency stop sitiuation. But your right, it could still be done if the blades where changed and if her mowing needs dont require lots of stopping and starting. One could live without the clutch and watch for maybe a rotted out KB model and rob the parts to change the YM version to the KB version. I am betting since she listed the Kubota on ebay, she is out for a different tractor now. Mike

I am open to keeping it if it works :) Thats all I really wanted...although I must admit after being on here a lot now I am getting big boy envy and all the attachments :) Hence open to all ideas :) I will check it out tomorrow morning and see what happens..

Rhonda, if the backside of the blades are flat, just sharpen the other side of the blade and see if it will cut grass, just plan your stops in advance, shove in the clutch and slow down gradualy. I know the "big boy" envy, but in my case, the little B6000 is the perfect size and uses very little fuel when I use it. That is high on my list as diesel is now at $3.89 a gallon localy!!! The old big farm tractors are nice, but not near as versitle as the little compacts, thats why they sell so cheap, I can get a Farmal H in good shape for half of what I paid for my Kubota, why, all you can do with a H is farm or run a bush hog. Its really to large for chores and yard work. A farmall Cub is an excellent choise, but up here a decent one with a belly mower will set ya back a nice $2500+ and most dont have a 3pt hitch, just a drawbar. Give it a try tomorrow and see how it behaves for stoping and starting, you might be able to make it work still. You have come so far to quit now. I couldnt do any better myself! You go girl!! Mike and Michele T

This is what the CCW clutch looks like. I purchased this mower not knowing that there were CW & CCW option. I need a CW. Rhonda, If you're interested in swapping the spindle/blade assemblies send me a PM. They should be fairly easy to ship

Sold. Seeking Next Tractor
The one you bought and painted sold, or the one on ebay?

Waaaaaaaayy up this thread, I think a couple people mentioned Yanmars (I think Queen of Spades and Steve in Tx); is that the route to go, or are you looking to super size?

I have some good friends here who farm 40 acres, I can ask them if they know anyone with something for sale (their kinfolk farm a couple hundred acres total in the area) if you want. One of them drives to Tampa and Oveido regularly and he might be able to deliver something from this side of the State.

Good luck

Seems overall people were saying move on, get something more suitable for your needs..I Still have the mower I need to fix up and sell or see if it works with a new tractor. Yes I am keeping my eyes out for another Tractor now. One that easily hasd parts, attachments. One that I can attach lots of stuff too now that I have learned so much about the tractots and what they can do. The bets one was learning they have a PTO attacgment that can cut all the hedges! LOL Mine are like 10 feet tall with about 400 feet of hedges surronding the property! Back to the Drawing board...
