Ordered this John Deere D105April 12th , total cost was $1588.00 which included WV. tax and had to order it, dealer did not have any in stock, but it came in last week and he delivered it last Wed.

I cut with it for the first time yesterday and overall after finishing in about an hour, I have to give the overall satisfaction with the machine a 7 out of 10. There was a learning curve for me in trying to get used to the new belt-driven mechanical CVT RT400 transmission, made by General Transmission. I found in mowing my slopes that this transmission does not act like a hydrostatic transmission in that if you stop on a grade, you better be quick on the brake pedal as soon as you let off the go pedal as it will begin immediately coasting backwards :duh:
I meant to get a picture of the shift lever, but forgot, sorry
. But anyway it has a Forward - Neutral - Reverse. Operation is simply moving the lever from neutral to forward and pushing down on the GO pedal on the right side of the machine, (same as a foot operated hydro) and to go in reverse, slip the lever into the reverse slot and push the go pedal again.
The brake pedal is on the left side of the machine.
You can lock the parking brake down and get off the machine to move branches, etc. and the engine will continue to run. You do have to shut of the mower deck however to do so, which makes sense.
The RIO button is easy to use, if you want to back up with the cutting blades still engaged, all you have to do is push the button while you shift into reverse and release it. No having to hold it down at all while backing up.
I had ordered new JD mulching blades and a mulch cover prior to its arrival. Installed the mulch cover and when the salesman delivered it I asked him if it had mulching blades installed already to which he said it actually has blades installed that serve all three capabilties the Edge Cutting System but dedicated mulching blades would be a better choice in his opinion. I decided to forestall installing the mulch blades right now and go ahead and give the blades that came on it a tryout. Must say after finishing, I was really pleased with the look of the lawn, and there was no wind rowing left from mulching.
I really liked the increments choice on the deck height selector as well, much better choices than my old L120

The 17.5 HP B&S engine did well going through thick grass with no bog down at all, and I also like that it is overhead valve, full-pressure lube, with oil filter. That was important to me in choosing this machine for cutting my sloping lawn in the rear of the house. The fuel gauge is different from my L120 in that it is mechanical instead of a see through window.

Choke and Throttle are one lever. To start it on choke the lever is placed to the top and then moved down after start to run.

Probably would have given this machine a 10 if I was mowing a flat lawn with no grades to contend with or obstacles.
The small seat is not very comfortable. Will consider upgrading that.
The transmission is light, IE: that results in alot of wheel spin on my sloping lawn when attempting a turn uphill. Perhaps a set of chains would help, another thing to consider.
I bought this machine in hopes that the new CVT transmission will do better in withstanding the cutting of my sloped rear lawn better than the K-46 transmission did in my old L120. As in anything only time will tell
