i have some questions. I havent been able to touch the 318 since i brought it home but the previous owner told me about 2 issues with it and maybe you guys know the fix for them.

1.After mowing for 30 minutes or so if stop and shut off engine and disengage the pto you have to wait until the pto cools down before it will engage again but if you leave the pto engage when you shut it off and then start it up the pto will work.

2 it back fires through exhaust if you shut it down with throttle up and don't give it a chance to to thottle down and idle before you shut key off.

any ideas what is wrong here?

Going to do the D-Dogg checklist as soon as i can but thought maybe you guys might know the answers for these 2 problems.

thanks

You will likely find the culprits going through the list, but I suspect the PTO issue is one of two things - improper air gap or a failing field coil.

Backfiring is a symptom of running hot and or lean. Cleaning the cooling fins and carb will help.

is the field coil different from the coil for the spark plugs?

Reset the gap at.018 and you will be good to go

I had a problem all summer with backfiring and it turned out that the the battery was bad, two dead cells, 17 cranking amps. The new battery, same size as the bad one, 540 cranking amps.

I did everything and tested everything before checking the battery, as I had done so in the spring before starting to mow and it was fine.
