I have a blue MTD 990 i bought a while ago and it says STC on the hood, i have been told it stands for Store-house Tractor Co? Also it has no starter generator and the grill does not have the part that sticks out to cover a starter generator pulley..... The tractor has every feature of a MTD 990 i have come across accept the starter generator like i said and there is no shifter to lock it in and out of drive, only the high/ low selector. my serial number is 41-018-0377 but i cannot seem to find a model number. I am very curious as to the year of the machine. Also it came with a 50in shaft driven deck if that helps at all! [/ATTACH]

The STC was STC American, one of many companies MTD supplies products to. Must be a regional chain store, as I have never heard of it.
None have a shifter to lock in or out of drive. The high/low speed selector has a neutral in the middle.
Many had a starter/alternator rather than a starter generator.
I'm not familiar with that serial number format, perhaps it was STC's. Can you post up the full engine spec # so we can guestimate the year?

I found this photo of a MTD someone posted for sale and put a red square around the lever i am talking about, mine does not have this. It only has a small lever under the seat that locks in Low, Natural, and High. I will post engine # soon

OK, so we will guestimate it is a 1982 model since your engine was built 2/10/82,
MTD lists only one manual for both 1981 and 1982

And the first to use the Magnetron electronic ignition instead of points/condenser. Apparently, this part of the engine must've been the only change between the 141-990A and 142-990A.
