My brother's 410c hasn't been run in a couple of years. It needs new batteries(2?). He said alternator light came on when last run, so I guess it needs to be checked out. If I get it running right he'll let me use it, but I'd like to know what all to service, look at, check, know about, etc. Do we need to do much more than put batteries in it to try it out, or what would you guys do to it before attempting to start it? I'm mechanically ok, but no experience with things like this machine. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks

Drain the fuel tank.
Add fresh fuel.
Replace fuel filters.
Change engine oil & filter.
Change hydraulic filter(s).
Clean transmission sump screen(this will involves draining trans. oil, removing screen to clean and re-filling trans.. If oil looks Okay, not contaminated, can reuse).
Replace air filter.
Install new HOT batteries.
Clean battery cable connections(especially the ground connection at frame).
Replace alt./fan belt.
Drain engine coolant.
Install fresh engine coolant.
Attach Voltmeter to batteries(note battery voltage before cranking)
Attach manual engine oil pressure gauge to engine oil galley.

After starting, check for for proper oil pressure and oil/coolant leaks.

Check alt. output(repair or replace as needed).

Sorry blackfoot1 but I'm going to disagree with you. Diesel is too high to drain & refill. 2 yr old diesel should burn just fine if no water is present. If water is present drain the water and use the good diesel. If anything I'd suggest pouring some Power Service fuel condition in it change fuel & hyd filters and see it it will move fwd/reverse and operate correctly before spending MEGA $$$$$$ servicing it.

Jim,
He asked. I posted what I would recommend doing. The only problem he stated, was the alt. wasn't charging. :dunno:

Drain the fuel tank.
Add fresh fuel.
I didn't state to fill up the tank. Two gallons(about $7 worth) will do.

The few items needed are less than $100. After being parked for a couple years, it's a small price to pay for piece-of-mind. :trink40:

I agree everyone is entitled to there opinion but I think to replace every item you listed in today's parts will well exceed $100 plus it would be a bummer to spend that money and engine knocked or machine wouldn't move when put in gear or hyd's wouldn't operate. I would check fluids and see if machine would operate before spending the $$$$$. I guess I'm a tight wad.

Here's the cost for parts from JD that I researched that were suggested.
AR94510 ELEMENT, FILTER ADD 32.28 USD 32.28 USD
TY25803 GROUP 31, 750 CCA, 180RC, STRONGBOX View/Update 211.01 USD 211.01 USD
AR50041 ELEMENT ,FUEL FILTER ADD 12.33 USD 12.33 USD
AT67957 ELEMENT ADD 16.51 USD 16.51 USD
AT44378 ELEMENT ,DRY CLEANER SAFETY ADD 19.99 USD 19.99 USD
AT65088 ELEMENT,PRIMARY ADD 25.51 USD 25.51 USD
T19044 FILTER,OIL ADD 5.52 USD 5.52 USD
*Total 323.15 USD
This includes no new oil or coolants.

Yes, if you buy JD items, they will be more expencive. Baldwin sells these filter at a very reduced price than the JD items.

AR50041 = BF909 $12.99
AR94510 = PT390-MPG $39.62
AT44378 = PA2570 $24.16
AT65088 = PA1882 $21.86
AT67957 = PT728-MPG $25.34
T19044 = BT259 $6.23

Total, $130.30

I did forget about the cost of the batteries. :dunno:

I fail to see the savings for buying Baldwin filters. $112.14 VS $130.30
JD vs Baldwin
AR50041 ELEMENT ,FUEL filter 12.33 vs 12.99
AR94510 ELEMENT, FILTER ADD 32.28 vs 39.62
AT44378 ELEMENT ,DRY CLEANER SAFETY ADD 19.99 vs 24.16
AT65088 ELEMENT,PRIMARY ADD 25.51 vs 21.86
AT67957 ELEMENT ADD 16.51 vs 25.34
T19044 FILTER,OIL ADD 5.52 vs 6.23

Thanks, guys. What about putting some Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder before starting? I know with my collector cars that's a suggested practice. I usually squirt some in, soak for a while to a few days, then proceed to crank the engine through a few cycles before reinstalling spark plugs and starting it.

To put Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders of a diesel especially without being able to R&R glow plugs(which a 401C doesn't have) is a little more complicated than on a gasoline engine. I'd just check the fluids,be sure there's fuel at the injection pump and try to crank it. If everything checked out then I service the engine & hyd/trans.
