Morning folks! I have a John Deere 445 that will not seem to crank! I have had it at the JD dealership and when I call them they say hey NP it cranked for us!, and I go by it runs, no charge I bring it home, mow for 2 weks and bam will not crank! Heres what has happened so far. I keep the tractor stored in an enclosed Garage w/ concrete floor, I go in key in ignition, advance the gas a little, push brake, turn key and the tractor just turns over until the battery gives out. It will sound like a couple of times it is going to start then zip, nothing, I took off the air cleaner and it has backfired a few times through the carb, fuel inj. works great, provides plenty of fuel. I have changed the battery, charged the battery, replaced the wire for the deadmans switch in the seat. Everytime I take it to the JD dealer, he keeps it for about 2 days then calls me back and says hey it cranks no problem. One time they removed the plugs and the mechanic said gas just poured out of the cylinder when they turned it over. The plugs look "ok".... I am at a loss of "What to do next?" All help appreciated!:banghead3

Are the plugs getting fire to them?

I'd pull the plugs and check for a spark too!

Hey guys!

First of all thanks for the replies! Yes it does get fire! I went in to the machine Saturday after leaving a battery charger on it overnight , and I came in to start it up, and I rode the starter for 30 - 40 secs, the engine turned over and began to pick up speed like it was going to start and stayed that way for 10 seconds, then the engine started and I held the starter on just to be sure the whole time this scenario was takin place. I advanced the throttle, and the engine did rev up albeit sounded "rough" like it was runnin on 1 cylinder and then she settled out and ran in a normal sound like both cylinders were fine.... I mowed 2 residences, came back and after running 1/4 tank out of gas, shut er down and restarted her twice like she never had a problem.... Call me puzzled. I will be recranking on Saturday for round 2, I'll let you know what happens, any ideas from you guys? Thanks in advance. Jerry

Could you be flooding it? PS Cranking the starter for 30-45 seconds is not good. It should fire off on the 3 - 4 crank.

larrybl - As for flooding, when I took it to JD, the guy asked me how I was cranking it... Answer: I turn on the switch and when I hear the fuel pump in the gas tank shut off, I crank it up, so if it is "flooded", it is flooded per procedure, ie: the fule pump is pumping gas to to the carb and maybe some jet or setting in the carb is allowing gas to go by and fill up the cylinder, but when I had it at the JD dealership, no mechanic there (avg yrs exp there = 25 so I am told), told me that that was "unusual" or that gas was somehow leaking by the carbuerator....

rabbitking61 - Yes as a matter of fact the 1st thing the JD guys did when they got it in was to look at a seat safety wire which they said had "come loose" and they tightened it, but the problem still existed...

Engine_tech - Yes read response above. When I purchased the tractor from the previous owner, I was instructed to "wait" until the system was "energized" and the pump had turned off then turn the switch over to crank. New plugs were installed when the "ground wire was fixed" (see rabbitking61 answer). :banghead3
