Hi
I have been helping my neighbor on his old model 212 mower. He had the trans apart because it was noisy and he started to replace a few odds and ends inside. When he was putting the case back on he did something I learned not to do....Hit the case with a hammer and it now has a hair line crack about a .5 inch long on top of the case where the shifter goes. Is there anything that you can do to fix it? Will it leak oil being its ontop? I am a good welder could you fill it with a small bead and then grind the bead down?? Any advice would be great, just glad its not my tractor!!

The big question is can you weld cast iron as that takes a certified welder to do in most instances. The guy I have seen do it grinds a groove where the crack is. Then he heats the area to red hot with a torch and then welds the crack with a wire feed welder while it is still red in color. Then he lets it very gradually cool off. He says it is about a 50% chance it will crack again along side the welded area. Roger

My dad and I fixed a 4hp Kohler block after a thrown rod cracked it.

I located the ends of the crack as best I could with a strong magnifying glass, then drilled a 1/4" hole at each end to keep the crack from growing. Dad did the welding. I didn't see how he did it but it held for several years..
Did it with a stick welder though.

That's the same transaxle used right from the 1966 110s on up (the Peerless 2300)... He should maybe start looking for a replacement case if it doesn't weld up nice (which sounds like it might be a problem to do), because I'd say its likely going to leak... That and you wouldn't want that crack to spread once you had the tractor back together... The transaxle takes some serious torque when the tractor is in motion.

Got the case down and laid a bead down. I think it turned out pretty good, I didnt let it get to hot, grinded it down and it looks good, now we will have to see if it holds. Just out of curiosity what is transaxle binding and what is the best way to fix it?

I rebuilt my 2300 after the springs in the ball spring detents failed allowing it to get stuck in gear. Shift fork slid over and wouldn't come back. If you're really unlucky it'll get stuck in two gears and won't move at all.

When you say it's locked up does that mean that the tractor wouldn't move under it's own power or it was stuck in one gear?

when I say he had to hit it with a hammer I meant that he had the case down and he had like 1/4 of an inch to go and his manual for his 212 and my 112 manual both say to tap it the rest of the way down and it did go it just got cracked doing it.

Good to hear it. My transaxle would spin the axles the opposite ways when I had the weight off the tires. Normal from what I've read.
