Actually, the Hondas are fine, and they were great when I had a flat 1/3 acre lot, but they're not up to the job of my current property. I felt that a Compact Diesel would be a bit much, especially cost-wise, so I went after an old Simplicity on Craigslist. I knew that Simplicity was a serious tractor, a friend's dad had one twenty-some years ago, and it made an impression. A bit of reading here at MTF and over at simpletractors sealed the deal- I'm a sucker for old stuff that's built to last. My bike is an 86 Honda, my two Honda tractors are late 80s. I like old Coleman lanterns and campstoves. My metal lathe is from 1939.

My 7116 is from 88, or at least the engine is. It was advertised as a 78, with a 48" deck. It's certainly newer than 78, and the deck is a 42" :(. Oh well, close enough. It came with wheel weights, chains, and a 42" blade, for about 45 cents a pound. The big Briggs starts instantly with a puff of smoke and runs pretty nicely, drippy carb and all. I've replaced the starter solenoid and starter gear so far. The deck has a few cracks, which I will repair. The BGB seems to have a little lost motion in the gears, about 3/8" on the hydro pulley, and the hydro side output shaft bearing is grumbling a little. The Sundstrand seems pretty good, no surging, and nice clean fluid inside. The wiring is mostly OK, but some "repairs" have been made, which are a horror show. Charging at 13.5-14 volts, has electric lift.

I've got a few things to straighten out, but it's a worker. I mowed a bit yesterday, heavy stuff that I haven't cut in months, and I am very impressed, both by the torque of the Briggs, and the quality of the cut. This 42" deck is not at its best, and it outcuts the Honda by a mile. The Honda is a 13HP twin, and has a fraction of the torque of this big thumper.

I am looking at a matched pair of 7119Hs tomorrow, both with 48" decks, both motors are rust-seized. What should I offer for them if the BGBs and Sundstrands are intact?

That Briggs 16 is my favorite engine...I'd say you're on your way to years of reliable and respectable lawn service. If you intend to use the machine for anything other than cutting grass, you're ready to rock as well!

Not sure on the 19's...a 48" deck can fetch a good price, as can a good tranny or BGB. I'd be comfy giving $300 each, if you intend to part them and make some money. Obviously, less is better. You should get that money back out of the deck and BGB...of course, I'd sell that 42" and keep the nicest of the 48"'s.

Apparently, I have caught whatever bug y'all have around here. I drove about an hour each way and brought both the 7119s home; gave 200 for the pair, which was all I could spare at the moment. They're pretty rough, but the decks seem usable, and the BGBs have almost no play at all. The hydros look intact, but I'll know more once I test them. Got 2 decent brake bands and cone clutches, at least. Both tractors are hydro lift, a comfort, since I don't know how long the electric lift on the 7116 will hold out. Both machines have cast iron wheel weights, one has calcium in the tires.

The boys selling them helped me load, and showed me an old Simplicity 36" blower in their shed. The 7119s belonged to the boys' father, who passed about two years back, and Robbie and his brother are keeping the place going as best they can. They're great guys, and hard workers, and really seemed happy that their old man's tractors would live on in some fashion.

I'm going back for the blower soon, and I intend to overpay a little for it.

ETA: It seems that all the service records, original bill of sale, owners manual, and a Simplicity catalog from 1984 were included.

I'm not sure if they'll run- I've got rust-bust sitting in the cylinders, time will tell. Both engines are Series II, so a least they're worth a try.

Robbie told me last night that he was hoping for 250 for both, and I told him that I had 200 to spend. He told me today that a guy had offered several hundred apiece about a month ago, driven three hours, and then wanted to pay 50 each. Rob figured he could get 50 if he scrapped them, so the guy drove home.

It's sorta like they were waiting for me. I feel a little bad that I didn't have an extra 50 to drop on them, but it's been tight this week. I'll make it up when I go back for the blower. It's the old 60s style 36", with the ribbed angled sideplates and the narrow auger. I doubt it'll fit the 7116, but it'll make someone happy somewhere.

ETA- turns out that Rob's brother- Mike, I think, has a turbo Volvo with some issues. Happens that I work with the best foreign car mechanic for about 50 miles. I'll see if I can get his car straightened out without charging a fortune.

That's what my backyard and shed look like... except mine is all different colors... a yellow wizard LT, wheel horse LT, Cub Cadet wide frame, old Allis B10, Toro tiller, and lastly a Toro recycler push mower I almost scrapped but the thing started with a little gas and I've used it ever since.
