Hello guys,

I have a new to me 1977 GT that I am waiting to do a carb rebuild on. While familiarizing myself with the machine I noticed there was no fuel filter or bowl and screen [according to Briggs manual, could be either or]. I'm assuming the PO replaced the filter with the existing shut off pictured below [picture #1]. My question is do you see any harm in splicing the filter along the line in the second photo? At least a small portion of the filter will be in contact with the shroud and I'm thinking heat may be an issue? The three photos show the entire fuel line run. In the last section before the carb [picture #3], the fuel line travels through a metal casing. Any thoughts/concerns about where I'm putting it or does my paranoia runneth over?

The casing is there for heat protection.

A small wire mesh filter wouldnt hurt, will grab large particals, but will not seperate water, or get finer particals, couldnt hurt at all.

Huh. I haven't seen one of those installations before, carb is on the backside of the gas tank with the fuel line inside of a second hose for heat protection. Is there a reason why the fuel line doesn't run the other way, not running over the exhaust pipe and by the sparkplug?
Take a look inside the fuel tank. That nipple on the bottom may already have a wire mesh 'screen' over it, inside. I'd suggest, the filter go between the shutoff and the engine, so you wouldn't have to empty the fuel tank to replace the filter.

Thanks guys - my concern, silly as it seems to me now, was the shroud getting too hot for the filter body itself to be in contact with it. Will check for a screen in the outlet. I guess I'll splice between the shut off and the clamp before the plug.

You might have luck with an Onan sintered brass low volume filter, its not much wider than the line itself, and doesnt stick out enough to touch whatever's hot.

Thanks for the suggestion Hugh....

I think what I may do is put the filter where the shut off is now and move the metal casing down and inch or so and put the shut off there right by the carb, or vice versa. That would eliminate any heat worries and would look a lot cleaner/neater than splicing in up front....

Actually the gas tank is on the starter side of the engine, it and they ran a length of fuel line around the head of the engine, over the muffler, and feds into the carb which is on the opposite side of the engine...

I have a couple like that 11hp. You can get a right angle shut off that threads into the carb inlet. Mind you that leaves the hose from tank to it with full fuel flow. I added my filter close to where you show the shut off.

38 racing,
