I just acquired another commercial 12. I have a drive unit that I have not seen before. The shaft housing is destroyed inside and I need another one. Bur I am not sure if they are all the same due to the drive dogs. What model deck do I have.

Got any pictures of the destruction?

I remember seeing a IPL of that style of 30"? mower drive. I agree it looks odd but it is original. I think it was intended for use with a Pro series tractor hence no safety clutch.

It was run without grease and the bearing and race got eaten up. I don't think a new race will seat without staking it.
I looked at 12 different model decks on parts radar and none show these drive dogs. Also the input shaft is different and I suspect that the bearings are different also.

Loctite Bearing Mount is what I use when a race is no longer a press fit in a casting. It holds well, fills in fairly large gaps and isn't so permanent that removal is either exceedingly difficult or requires heat. Do NOT use Loctite red. That is much too aggressive an adhesive.

If it were mine I would try Bearing Mount first. If that failed then it would be time to sleeve the casting.

That's probably what I will do. I would still like to know what year and model gravely used this type drive so i could see a schematic.

I saw that setup pictured on a 40" mower and within the past week too. I just can't remember where.

If you are referring to the end that bolts to the quick hitch, it is flared. I've searched Gravely's parts radar but I can't find this particular hook up. Any Idea's.

I think this is what he means by flaired. That's why I call it a crown gear.

It matches the one that is currently on the 5260. I'll see if I can find any part numbers tomorrow when it isn't lightning out.
Thanks Don. Much appreciated.

That is another first for me. I didn't see that in my research today.
Some more pics of what I have.
Thanks Ron.

GP, that Dog Clutch is of the type used on the new style Rotary Plow. Should be held by a retaining ring. The earlier flared Dog Clutch was held by a nut. The later version is splined while the earlier version is keyed.

This one is fine splined and held on by a retaining clip. This drive is on a 30 inch mower.

The Rotary Plow flared Dog Clutch which is splined is Pt # 022240. The flared and keyed unit is 019592. It was also used on the QH Sickle Bar mower.

As for finding the Model that GP has, the only part number I found was for the Swivel Casting. And it was used on many different units but none show the ones we are looking for. When I get up to Ohio in a few weeks, I have a rack of old IPLs which is where I think I figured out my parts from.

Makes one wonder why so many different drives.

Makes one wonder why so many different drives.
Many years ago, the wise Gravely engineers all go together to discuss the future plans. While they were very smart, they also believed in pulling pranks. So that all sat down to figure out what they could do. One said, maybe we should paint them in all different colors. That would confuse the people in the future and make them scratch their heads. Can you imagine what it would be like with pink, green, yellow, red, orange, and blue tractors running around with the same name on them? They thought about it but decided they'd leave that to the customers. Another said, maybe we should make some operate backwards of others. Nobody will own more than one at once so they won't know there are others that work differently. That will confuse scholars in the future when they get more than two together. Well that one got approved and started happening in 1967. But the wisest engineer said let's really confuse them in the future. Let's change the drives for no apparent reason at all. That one got rave responses and so they did.:trink40:
