Hi: I don't have a video cam that I can record it easily, but I took my laptop out and with Audacity program recorded for you a 2 minute 26 second clip of my 355D sounds just sitting inside in the garage -- about at 279 hours :). JJW's looks a lot cleaner than mine.

Sorry about no video. MP3 URL here: http://goo.gl/OPdVS

You should be able to play the sound with any MP3 Player.

0:00 - 0:07 Startup
0:15 - 0:45 to 1/3 throttle
0:45 - 1:30 to full throttle (you can hear it smooth out)
1:30 - 1:45 steady state FOT
1:45 - 2:10 down to idle
2:10 - 2:30 idle clack-clack-clack sounds..
2:33 shutoff.
Thanks for posting that. Sounds good to me!

According to my owner's manual, engine model is 2V-78, rated at 13.4KW (18HP), V-Twin, liquid cooled. I think it's around 750cc (less than 800cc) but not 100%.

The engine layout is the engine is laid down sideways, with I think the flywheel (?) side facing up mounted to a fan that pulls air down through a radiator. The 2 V cylinder heads points to two front wheels are, and on the bottom is the power pulley. I am not 100% sure the type of engine but I think block is aluminum or whether it's sleeved w/ iron cylinder insert.

So I think it is vertical [crank]shaft V-Twin per your question.

I found this link on the 355D (2V-78) engine (engine block diagram & parts list) and looked through it from this web page http://www.suckindiesel.com/thingy/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1616 searching through Google.

It looks pretty much dead on of layout w/ the 355D Engine on JD (with the exception of their addon Intake Airtake filter assembly) and probably the engine mount application.

I am going to save this PDF to my collection.

Thanks for the sound track. Mine sounds exactly like that. I had a chance to hear one shortly after I posted last year so I knew the sound was normal. I have put about 40 hours on it & like it better every time I use it, lots of power.
Thanks again,
Jerry

Thanks for the comments. It is was about as clean as you will find for a 2001. I figured if he kept it that clean he most likely kept up on the mantenance too, which he said he did. I did need to put in a new battery last fall which was still the original.
Getting the battery out was no easy tast, very limited room. I loved my 345 but have no regrets on the change. I grew up on a farm & have always been fond of diesel engines.

Ran across this thread on Google. We bought ours in May of 2001. I like the economy of the diesel and being able to pull up to the farm diesel tank. The power steering is nice.

I thought it would be our last mower after a 216 for 22 years. It was still going strong but I was tired of gas cans. It took 5 gallons to mow my vineyard. The diesel does it in much less than the 3.8 gallons it holds.

I wish I had thought about the dumb design of the radiator laying flat on top of the engine. It is great at building up with trash. Within the first year it started loosing coolant internally. (not in the oil) The dealer pulled the heads and installed gaskets. Still loosing coolant I took it to another dealer. They fixed it, but didn't say what they did. It was fixed and back to work. I was glad I kept the 216.

Next the rubber bumpers under the seat rotted to nothing. It is parked inside when not in use so I couldn't blame the sun. So far the new ones are holding up.

As previously mentioned, don't let it idle. It will make you think the engine is going to break something getting ready to exit the frame. I don't like having it on high idle when off the mower doing something, but do so it won't shake the mower apart.

If you haven't bought an air filter, be sitting down when you call the dealer for a price. Don't expect to blow it out. You can get enough dirt out of it to finish what you are doing and park it. You'll know when it need replacing when the mower deck stops and lights are flashing.

After the quality and durability of the 216, I consider the 355D to be of poor design. I wish we had looked at Kubotas. I'll keep changing the oil every 50 hours and other p.m. If anything major goes wrong it will get parted out on ebay.

I know what you mean by sitting down before you get the price of the filters. I have changed engine oil & filter twice, the hydrostatic oil & filters once & the air cleaner filter. I have put over 100 hours on it with no problems so far. Sorry you had some problems with yours. I hope that is not the normal for that engine. I had a Cub Cadet with a Kobota diesel in it a few years ago. It ran fine but was very hard to start. If it got below 40 degrees forget it. I put a water heater on it which helped. I think the problem was it did not have a large enough battery & no room to put in a bigger one. That was back in the 1970s if I remember right.

I put about 400 hours on my 355D before trading for an X748SE. The only trouble I had was the composite valve covers, both of them stared to leak oil from the casting marks. This happened at under 50 hours.

I never let mine idle. They did not make a block heater for it and the winter starts shook really bad.

As far a debris on the top radiator I would say the 748 is not better. It sucks in a lot of stuff too. I bought a small shop vac when I had the 355D just for cleaning the radiator after each use. The screen on top of the radiator let a lot of stuff get through. I still use the shop vac on the 748. After vacuuming I use compressed air to get the rest of the dust out.

These things are low to the ground and pick up a lot of junk. Mowing the big areas with my L3400 I get very little junk in the radiator. But then, I suppose having a rear finish mower has a lot to do with that.

I think I bought my 355 in 2002, Im nearing 500 hours on it, I to had valve cover leaks right after I bought it. other wise no problems so far, Im very happy with it.
The shaking at idle and rough idle is just part of the 355 I think, it has always been there on mine.
Sorry I didnt see this thread a long time ago.:dunno:

My FIL bought a 355D and a 54" deck with only 7 hours on it last summer and hasn't used it at all yet. It has never cut a blade of grass. I helped him pick it up and that was the only time I heard it run. Very cool sound, but noisy. I think he's saving it for me. LOL!!!

Here is a picture of it the day we got it.

While mowing this afternoon the glow plug and temperature lights started flashing. Time for an air filter. I think it has been two years this time. It doesn't get used as much when I cultivate the vineyard.

I think I'll take an old filter to Napa and see if they can match up a paper element for it. They seem to be good enough for other diesels. I did the same thing for my Hatz diesel irrigation pump. A new one from Hatz was $96. I got one at Napa for $15.

I just looked on tractor data and saw that the 355D was discontinued in 2001. Who did you find that had a 11 year old tractor that only had 7 hours on it? Personally I can't imagine having that nice of a tractor and never using it. BTW, beautiful tractor, but I guess it should be with almost no hours on it. I'm sure your FIL will enjoy it.
