went to get some hay for a friend and saw a old SP snapper with a bagger sitting in a barn.i offered $30 for it and also found that it has a THATCHER attachment to go on the front of the mower!! and it runs but needs carb work.it also needs the throttle/kill switch lubed.it also has the bag and chute but i need a discharge/mulch plug.it also has a 4 hp aluminum bore briggs and friction disk drive.is there any thing i should know about these mowers before i lube it all up and go mow happy?

and pics are to come as soon as i get some time to my self.............

Do your basic check on the briggs, check that your drive bail is adjusted properly (you should be able to pull the mower while running in the reverse direction otherwise it's too tight). Also make sure you have enough 00 grease in your diff. Happy mowing!

so far the bent crank makes no excessive vibration but you cant see that its bent.....and im sure it will need a disc too for the SP.but most of all i want to find a discharge chute.i could go with out one but suffer being covered in grass and fear of thrown objects (im used to that from my echo SRM 210 throwing stuff at me)

any idea what year this thing is?

It was made in Jan 9th, 1986.

Below is one made on 1981 with 3.5HP engine I just sold last week. It has more power than most nowsday's 6-7HP mower.

im guessing mine is older since its a presafety compliance and theres no evidence that it ever was a safety compliance unit......my guess is that it might be a 1974 because thats when they made the "V" series....

Gotta love the aluminum deck snappers! Those steel discharge chutes are a bear to find, I paid 25$ for a used but otherwise solid one. Took awhile too, they all get torn up form running into things and rocks.
