JD guidlines of only mowing 1/3 of the grass length at a time, if you try and cut too much it doesnt have the guts to blow it back and clogs. If the problem persists I will upgrade to the bagging blades.

"If the problem persists I will upgrade to the bagging blades"
I did a long time ago made a huge improvement.

P.S. Having $ in your pocket is nice, when you earn it like you have :thThumbsU

well I have to say i have put over 6 hours on Darla in the last 4 days, and shes cutting beautifully, i managed to take a lawn that took me 1:20 on Bessy and cut it down to just over :40... I havent really had too much chance for pics yet, but I will asap. I have run residential machines for my business the last 7 years without issue. but this year will be a real test as i've expanded greatly. I will say this, the bagger does fill well as long as you stick to the JD guidlines of only mowing 1/3 of the grass length at a time, if you try and cut too much it doesnt have the guts to blow it back and clogs. If the problem persists I will upgrade to the bagging blades. the 42 bagger i find is a little small for the most part, and honestly how do they expect someone to stretch the rubber ties as far as they are supposed to go! they could have given like about another inch of rubber to work with.

as for loading it sideways, I did travel successfully that way on saturday, granted i added a few more tiedowns to the hood and seat areas. Nyssf, I believe you are right in the sense that they should manufacture some sort of latches as it would not be that hard on cost...
oh and for the most part, my commercial mowing is done via pushmower, the majority of the work that Bessy and now Darla will see is moving my equipment from customer to customer as i am working in a small town...

Just to echo John Reliable, Get the Deere high lift blades.

I waited 4 years......And when I got them I could have kicked myself. 100% improvement in pushing grass and leaves through the shoot.

Bah! I didn't think the young fella was that thin skinned to go running away over nothing. ****, he works like a man, has his own business, and buys his own tools! Bessy, be sure to keep up with the maintenance properly, and keep us up to date on how it holds up.

Wow! I never even considered the hood issue. OTOH, I don't trailer it much and it's always at surface street speeds.
Still though, thanks for mentioning it. I'da been on the side of the road turning the air blue.

It has been my experience when buying ANYTHING from my local JD dealer that the sales people there are NOT trained on the lawn/garden tractors or their implements. They are there to sell $500,000 tractors and combines. They will deign to write up a sale for you on a lawn tractor or attachment, but don't expect them to have knowledge, much less expertise, in that area. Maybe other dealerships are different...

That said, I think you guys have done a great job of driving away the OP (Bessy). Hopefully I'm wrong. So much for "the friendliest tractor forum"...
$500,000 tractors and combines? Not yet, but they probably will get that high sooner or later.

My dealer (who happens to be my second cousin) is a lawn mower geek, so I pretty much let him steer me in the right direction. That sucks that your dealer treats you like an inconvenience.

Getting in here a little.
I agree that just cause it worked before doesn't mean it works now. Customers drive the prices. They look at a Murray and can't understand why the JD costs more. Look the Murray has hood hold downs..... When you haul anything it should go the same way it drives or something might happen.
Sure the dealer knew about loading it front first but did he learn it by loading one sideways and replacing a the hood when his delivery guy screwed up? I would lean toward this answer.

Take care of your machine and just mow with it and it should serve you well. I buy from the dealer but by JD agreement all JD mowers have to be sold at the set price so everyone is on the same playing field. I sold many JD mowers at HD because buyers used their HD card and many were sold on Sunday when the dealer isn't open.

As far as the machine sold at HD with the battery hooked up backwards, blame a local dealer. ALL HD machines must be checked out by a dealer before being sold (when I worked there). If you look on the machine there will be a sticker from that servicing dealer on it somewhere. Our dealer put his sticker right on the back. I could not sell a JD until the paperwork was signed that he had done his inspection. This screwed me one Sunday because of a late Saturday delivery.

I agree that in 99% of the cases you won't buy anything from an experienced person at HD.

Reading this reminds me of when I was younger, mowing yards with an old ariens rear engine rig with a JD 80 cart to haul the push mower in. I recall drolling over the 455 when it came out, told myself some day I'd have one. Years later I finally got mine. The day my dad let me use his 400 for mowing was just awesome. Point is, hard work pays off, and I think any youngster that cuts lawns probably looks for the day they can buy their own Deere. Congrats on your purchase. Take care of her and she'll treat you right I'm sure.:thThumbsU

And to think when I bought my X485 last year I drove home 5hrs with that thing on the trailer with grills facing the back of trailer and did not thing to bungee it down and did not have a issue. I will not bungee that sucker for sure after reading this one...

When I bought my JD LA series tractor, I could have gotten it at a JD dealer around the corner from my house or Lowe's 10 miles away. Neither offered free delivery and the dealer was just around the corner so I chose the JD dealer. The dealer wanted 200 bucks more, but I talked him down to 100 and he agreed to install the bagger for me. He would not budge on the delivery charge even though I was right around the corner. I almost drove it home, but I would have to have driven 1/10 mile on Rt. 9 (A busy road) I paid the extra 100 bucks, because I did not want to drive across town with the tractor in my 4X8 (Harbor Freight assembled by me) trailer. (Lowe's is now offering free delivery so if I was to buy it today, I would probably choose them and saved the 100 bucks and put it together myself.)
That said, I had some initial problems with my tractor. It had a slight oil leak and the valves were not adjusted properly making it hard to turn over the engine and making me believe the battery was weak. Now if I had bought this from the “Box Store” the problems would have been attributed to me buying it at a box store………..Right? So it goes to show you, you can have problems no matter where you buy your tractor. And this had nothing to do where I got it, but all to do with the assembly line worker that assembled and tested my engine in the assembly plant.
So now I think, great, I am lucky I got it from the dealer, and I will get preference on getting the warranty repair done quickly… Think again. The Deere dealer told me there was a three or four week wait for service because this was their busy season, (late spring). Fortunately I was able to mow with it and wait out the spring until their service time was down to less than a week. I took it in and they fixed it in less than a week. I have now had 4 years of trouble free mowing since the repair and do all my service myself.

2 observations. 1, it still amazes me when people buy anything from a big box store, and expect competent sales staff, or product knowledge. IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN PEOPLE!!!!!! 2, when it's on your truck or trailer, you, and you alone fully own the responsibility to ensure that the cargo is safely secured. I don't care who loaded it, you're hauling it. Aside from that, I do wish you good luck with your new tractor, and I hope it lasts you a long time.
Or Customer Service; a couple of years ago I picked up 38 sheets of finished plywood my neice purchased for a DIY project she was doing; I went through all of the wood to make sure I wasn't getting any of there damaged pieces; loaded it on the cart myself, and loaded my pickup for the 3 trips I needed to make. I never once was asked for any help even though a few guys walked by; I rarely buy from the Big Box stores; I would rather pay the extra from the local hardware and/or lumber yard.

Congrats Bessy! Its great to see a motivated young man out working for himself instead of sitting inside playing video games and texting all day! Good luck and don't forget the pics!

I have hauled 2 210s on my HF trailer. One 45 minutes in a snow storm with the snowblower attached. Yeah it was backwards too!

Trailer is good for 1100 lbs, it can handle it. Plus mine was basically brand new at that point. Lots of really good reviews on those trailers, they can really take a beating. Thinking about welding mine to add some strength. Some of the best money I have ever spent.

I got it with one of their 20% discount coupons. The **** thing was cheap to begin with and with the 30% off..... I put wood sides on it and use it to haul leaves to the recycle center and pick up stuff from home depot. Unfortunately the one I got did not have brackets for the side kit they sell. I had to rig and make my own. My tractor has make two trips on it, and less than 1/2 mile. I just worry about the thing falling off.

Sounds like the deal I got. I only have a sedan so I use it for my hardware store runs and buying large items. Only had heavy stuff on there a few times.

I've been selling mowers at a big box for over 5 years. I knew more about the X500 than the "Sales Manager" at the dealership I bought it from did. But hey it's ok, I love it when people like you show up and expect that I don't know anything, and then I proceed to correct them on everything they try and say in front of their wives about the "MTD built John Deeres" I sell. They usually wind up looking like a fool.

I used to work at the Big Orange Box and I have to admit there were more clueless folks than experts... At least around my parts.. YMMV!

When I was in the market for my mower, I knew what I wanted did my own research and picked exactly what I wanted. Then I went shopping. Did not need a sales person to do anything else but ring me up at the register. And that is how I buy just about anything to day.
Last week I bought a 59 inch TV. I did my research, picked out my model, and shopped around. Got it online with free delivery and no sales tax. Saved 100 bucks over what I would have paid for it on sale at any local store. And never spoke to anyone.
