Finally got the Bolens H16 into the shop to see if she has any life left, now I have questions and stumbled upon this site.

Obviously, I am not the only one passionate about old tractors! This is a very informative site!

Thank you,

Travis

Also a warm welcome. we want pics

I will work on pics!

Tractor: Bolens H16, model #1656, Tec OH160, Hydro, Hydraulic lift, tiller.

I decided it was time to asses it.

Disassembled fuel lines and carb, thoroughly cleaned and have fuel flowing through the carb. I also installed new plug, battery, air & fuel filter.

Cranked it up, got it running briefly. Lost spark, traced it back to magneto and have found that if I take the nut off the ground wire on the magneto and loosely rest eyelet on grounding stud on magneto that I get spark. Any ideas?

Secondly, after resting wire on grounding stud and trying to start, I saw a fireball shoot from the oil dipstick area. Apprehensive about smoking the tractor I put it all back together and starting researching, this is where I stumbled upon this site! Any suggestions here? I suspect blown head gasket or cracked block?
Thought I would search for advice before tearing into it?

:Welcome1: Travis!

That fireball would seem to indicate that you are getting fuel into the crankcase. Also ignition is probably getting past the rings.

The fuel pump on an OH160 is typically a pulse pump that uses crankcase pressure changes to operate the pump. If so, that might indicate a bad pulse pump is letting fuel into the crankcase. Check the oil for a gasoline smell.

Sure enough there is fuel in the crankcase! While cleaning earlier, I was curious as to why that hose went from pump to crankcase, thanks for the info.

Will a new fuel pump clear up the problem or must I do more?

Thanks,

Travis

No more fireballs, huh? (pout)

A hose from the pump to the crankcase just does not sound right. Can someone enlighten me why that would be? Perhaps an emission control that is supposed to vent the crankcase to the fuel system and to the cylinders?

Nope. There is the same air displacement on the back side of a piston as there is on the top; if you have a 20 cubic inch cylinder with a piston moving up and down, it moves air on both sides of that piston. This cuases a pulsing of air in the crankcase. This crankcase pulsing is used to run a small rubber diaphram inside the fuel pump, on the other side of the rubber diaphram is fuel and a set of one way flaps (valves) that push fuel to the carb. If you try to run your tractor without a dipstick, it will not pump fuel properly.

Windage trays in racing engines are used to combat excessive crankcase turbulence, which can lead to oil starvation at high rpm. You wouldn't think it would be that big of a deal, but there is alot of wind turbulence generated from the back side of a piston.
