Do you actually need front weights with the single bagger? I noticed on all the info for the clam-shell and double bagger there are included weight kits but the single does not. I also noticed that in Snappers literature, they show a single bagger on a RER without front weights. Anyone use a single bag catcher without front weights on their RER?

Thinking out loud, I think front weights would make sense if the total weight of the operator plus the weights would off set the total weight of whatever is in the bagger.
If you think of the back wheels as the center of the balance, whatever is on the bagger side has to be offset by the stuff on the front end side.

I dont use any weights on mine. No problems.. but its only 5 bushels too.
Thanks Guy! The 5 bushel single bag catcher is what i'm interested in. I bought a clam-shell bagger but decided it was too heavy for my tastes (although emptying while on the mower would have been very cool) and I didn't like the front weights covering up my Snapper's nose.

Clam-shell is for sell if anyone wants one. The guy I got it from bought it in 2008 and used it twice, then the snapper engine died. It sat in his garage until i bought it (and the Snapper Comet HV) so it looks like it's only 2 weeks old....first $375 (plus shipping) gets it (the clam-shell and all original paperwork/baggie of attachment goodies - including sealed up lift-wings).

I do use the weights with my single bagger due to when I am on a slope and have to stop and turn around or the like, the front wheels would lift off the ground when the bag is neer full.
Front wheels not making contact with the ground = no steer. I didn't like that with a blade spinning.
If your yard is flat you should be ok, but I would still recommend them.

When that bag is full its a PITA to empty. Its also very easy to pop wheelies and lose steering control.

I have the doublew bagger (6 bushels I think) and my weight kit is still sitting on the shelf in its original package. But it's dead flat here.

I just saw this thread and have been trying to get a grass catcher for my machine for several months now.

I went down to my local Snapper dealer and paid for a new kit. Not sure which one but it was a over $300. That was May 5th. Today I went and got my money back. They kept feeding me a line about not being to order it like a part. It had to be ordered with equipment?????

In any case I have a 2007 28" High Vac Rear engine machine and want to buy a grass catcher for it.

Which one should I go with, and Where can I buy it?

Any advice you folks can give me would be greatly appreciated!

From what I was told by a dealer, Snapper only warranties the mowers in the configuration they're sold in. Which is probably what they were doing; waiting on a new mower order and adding a bagger to one of their newly ordered mowers.

You can find them (baggers) all over the Internet. I actually am going to sell the Clam-Shell bagger I just acquired - if you're interested in that model. I'm going to go with a single bagger.

I'll get a pic posted as soon as the leaves start falling as i've only had it on the old Comet HV the one time i've used it and won't be putting it on my Snapper until the fall.

Here is my quick mini-review of it:

Very well built and actually looks really cool on the Snapper. It has cool looking raised Snapper logo on the back and a friend that has a lawn/construction business saw it sitting off to the side and commented "those clam-shell baggers are the best thing you can have".

The pros are the obvious in that it appears durable enough for years and years of punishment and it does it's job very well. There is a house for sale 2 doors down and the old man that used to have it (also used a Snapper) died and since then they're pretty much cutting the formerly beautiful lawn maybe once every 6-8 weeks. So it is very thick still but has a mix of weeds now growing into it (very sad). So I had had enough and decided to give it a cut with this old Snapper Comet HV I got when I got the bagger. Side note: it did a super job. But all that excess grass looked like a job to test out the bagger. I put it on and went to work. I really do like having the ability to dump the load (heh) without getting off the mower. Really makes short work of the task and you don't end up worn out from the frequent dismounts and empties.

The only two downsides I found with it is you need to make sure you pull forward a bit if you do empty it while on the mower. If you don't you can shut clumps of grass into it when you close it and being that it's not actually closed, it will leak out some of what you're sucking up. The other is the weight and bulk of the unit. If you have limited storage and don't plan on keeping this on your mower all year round (i only use a bagger in the fall) then you might want to consider that. It is pretty big and being rigid plastic/metal you can't make it any smaller. It is also pretty darn heavy compared to the single/double baggers so if you're like me and live alone, it can become a problem if you plan on taking it off or putting it on. It really is a 2 person job. One could do it, but it wouldn't be a pleasant experience.

So in summary - It works great, looks super cool, and is certainly the bagger of choice if you can't stand the frequent bag empties that are required with standard baggers. But anyone considering one needs to consider storage space (if they plan on taking it off at points during the year) and the need for 2 people to get it put on or taken off your mower.

"Without anyone in the seat, a full bag nearly tips the Snapper backward. I'll con my friends at a local shop for some cast iron/steel plate to make my own counter weights. "

That's a quote from my posting elsewhere yesterday. I'm trying to figure a nice way of emptying the single bag into a trash bin. I'm doing it now by pulling the grass bag part way out and grabbing handfuls of grass. That's when the 12.5Hp motor and the grass almost tip backward without a counterbalance on the front. :fing20:

Re: Grass Catching Questions

Anyone with hints for better bagging?
1. How tight does the deck adapter have to be? I think my next blade will be a Hi-Vac with the ears on it. Earlier I had reasonable results with just the Gator blade...but recently the 'crab grass has simply clogged the tube instead of blowing up into the catcher.

2. Is it critical for all components to be air-tight?

3. Dumb question? How much space should be allowed under the deck?
