Hello

We are working on a Tecumseh mv100s engine and we needed to remove the crankshaft to replace some bearings but we did not realise that the crankshaft had needle bearings. As we tried to remove the crankshaft with a rubber hammer all of the needle bearings fell out onto the patio/yard. We gathered up all we could and we found out that we needed 37 needle bearings but we only managed to find 36 so one missing (which is always the case!) So now we are looking to buy loose needle roller bearings (rounded ends) to replace the missing item.

I did a measurement of the needle roller and it came out as 1.97mm diameter by 12.50mm length. I cannot find any with those measurements so my question is would a 2mm by 12mm roller bearing be ok as a replacement or do they need to be the exact measurment?

Thank you kindly in advance for your assistance and advice.

How are you measuring the old needles ? .02 mm will be within error measuring with calipers a quality micrometer would be able to see this .
The length shouldn't be an issue the diameter could be wear or an error in measurement .

Edit
1.97mm is close to 5/64 " being the engine is made is USA we use inches . 12.5mm is close to 1/2"

Welcome to MTF, glad you joined!!

Needle bearings are usually in a "cage". For loose needles to fall out, the cage or other retainer would have failed.

I agree with 3/4-wrench, you need to be sure of the exact measurement using a micrometer. One mis sized needle will cause havoc in no time.

In the US we have places like McMaster Carr who carry a large selection of needle bearings as complete units including the retention cage.
Trying to source a single needle of correct size (let alone account for the wear on the other 36 is nigh on impossible. I believe you would have much better luck finding a complete needle bearing replacement unit.

Tecumseh parts are still available from some on line sources. I see Tecumseh needle bearings supposedly OEMs for between $25 and $32 US. I don't know about the UK. If you are rebuilding, I'd suggest spending the time to find the correct complete replacement bearing.

Thank you for the reply. I was measuring the needle roller with digital calipers. Thanks for the advice about the inches measurements that is very helpful.

Thank you for the welcom Alien5044 and the reply. These were loose needle bearings not housed in a cage.
