Hi Everyone,

I recorded a YouTube video with a bunch of modifications that I made to a free snow thrower. I figure this group might find it interesting. The main thing I wanted to show was how to motorize the discharge chute using engine electricity. All of the videos that I found needed you to install a battery to power the motors. I recorded this video to show how to get power out of the engine stator. The electrical schematics are included. While at it, I also showed a couple of the other modifications I made to it.

I hope this helps!

Interesting that you were able to add all of that without a battery. How long have you tested operating it with the light on, using the actuator, and turning the chute? I will say that it is one great advantage of LED lights, they don't hit the power system hard like incandescent or halogens.

I've been running it this way for about 3 years and am very happy with it. So the way I have it hooked up you can really only move side to side or up and down, but not both at the same time. I'm using all the electricity that the engine can put out. That said, the lights will cut out when I'm moving the chute. I'm not moving when that happens so it's fine with me. I did end up taking the incandescent off the machine so that's no longer there.

A good LED magnetic worklight or two might do the trick. I'd make some mounts so that the light is higher than the chute pointing down at the ground and one on each side so no matter which direction you are blowing one light is relatively clear of whipping snow. That's still a great modification and I'm glad you clarified what you could and couldn't do. I figured there would be an electrical limit from the stator at a certain point.

I mistyped earlier (it's now fixed.) I took off the incandescent light and left the LED on. Still, that one is REALLY bright and I have no trouble seeing ahead of me.
If you're curious, here's a video of how the chutes work.
