Hey all, this is my first riding mower and I'm a little ignorant of what can cause this.

I run the mower for about 15 minutes and it begins to surge and then dies. I let it sit a while and it runs normal again. Sounds like it's overheating. I am riding it at full blast on lvl3 to try and get through my big lawn as quickly as possible. Is that bad? Are they supposed to be able to handle that?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, the engine should be able to run continually at full speed.

You might start with trying something simple, and loosening the cap on the gas tank and seeing if the problem still happens (ie, the vent in the cap may be plugged, eventually causing a vacuum in the tank as fuel is used, preventing the engine from getting any).

Ah good point. I'll check into that. I suspected fuel flow too, so I bought a new filter. This is gravity fed though right? I can see if the cap is plugged that a vacuum would build up. I have a very dusty lawn in spots and a lot of dirt kicks up. Thanks guys!

Ok, sounds good. Thanks for the welcome! Let me get back to you with that info. I can tell you oof the top of my head that it's a Troybilt Bronco 46x with a th a Chinese off brand motor. There's no indication of the brand on it. I can get the model number when I get home!

if you think it's the china MTD engine they are pretty dependable . start with loosing the gas cap replace the pickup filter inside the tank and the fuel line and fuel filter .i don't know whats going on but this year for some unknown reason i have seen way to many clogged filters causing surging .even my own machines

i'm attaching a few manuals to help you a TAD
