Hello, new member here. Glad to be a part of a community with vast knowledge and experience. I just recently purchased a JD 165 Hydro and the cooling fan has several blades missing. So, I have purchased a new one with hopes of "You Tube" to save the day on changing it out. No luck thus far. Does anyone have any helpful hints, or assistance they could offer up? Or, has this question ( I am sure it probably has) been asked before, if so, can you point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for your help.
😊

from the parts catalog, it appears that you pull the bolt that holds it on, pull the fan off, and put it back together... i should know better than that due to owning a 185 with the same Eaton hydro, but i have not had to get under it yet...LOL

I believe the 165/175/185 has 2 different design hydros. One has a fan that is on the right side, mounted vertically, inside the right rear wheel. The other has a fan, mounted horizontally under seat and fender pan. Which one do you have?
I've changed out the vertical one inside of the right wheel. Remove the wheel, the screen/guard next, and the fan is right there. Removing the wheel may be the bigger problem, as many are seized to the axle.
I suspect that changing the horizontal one under the seat is as simple as taking off the seat and fender pan.

NYKen,
I have the vertical one, just inside the right wheel. I for sure will remove the wheel and the screen/guard and go from there. Thanks for the direction!

the 165 only ever used the eaton, which is the vertical one... the horizontal pully one is the Sunstrand hydro, which came on later model 185s only...

Bogieboy,
I sure hope it as easy as this. Thanks for the direction.

I believe your fan should look like this. 4 bolts hold it on.
I pulled this hydro out of a 175 that had a blown motor as I figured I'd need it sooner or later.
The hydro is now in my 1986 185-46 that my son has used for the last few years as his regular and only mower.
I believe the tag says it's a peerless.
Hope this helps.

Yep, thats the one that the 165 would have as well.... the axle is peerless, they hydro unit on it is the eaton hydro. The newer 185 Sunstrand ones are unitized construction like all the newer transaxles with the wheel motor and pump both buried inside the housing.
