Since I retired a few months ago, I've been looking for 425, 445 or 455 over the last several months to build a loader for. I had found a couple that would of worked, but missed them. This 455 was listed on C/L for $2500 for over 30 days. A couple of weeks ago I see that he dropped the price to $2000. Sent a message and set up a time to go see it. Here is the way it was listed:

He had bought it from his employer to fix-up, but he found that he just doesn't have time to work on it, so he put it up for sale. He had bought new side panels as the ones on it were broke on the bottom. He cleaned the fuel tank and installed a new fuel filter and got it running. The 54" deck is a little rough and one of the gauge wheels hanger has been welded up. The gearbox looked good and no noise from it.

So I offer him $1700 cash and he took it. I know how you all want to see pictures, so here they are.

Just ordered a new hood, grille, decal set, seat and tail light assembly. Plan on changing all the fluids later this week and find a correct battery for it. The rear fender pan has some stress cracks around the seat bolts, and going to pick one up tonight along with the lock-up knob, forward and reverse pedals, and the correct throttle knob. All the removable metal parts will get stripped and powder coated.
The rear pan on the trans-axle must of had a leak at one point and someone resealed sealed it with silicone, so I want to replace with a new gasket.

Good purchase.. good platform to work on. Pays to be patient. Congrats on retiring!

Congrats on retiring!
Thanks,

One of the first projects that I want to get done, now that I'm retired, is to build the 2 140 H3's I have down to bare frames.
It's been 8 or 10 years since I tore the first one down and just never took the time to build it.

Looks like a lot of potential especially at that price. I bet he got cold feet after feeling the sting of the side panels purchase. Hard to blame a guy for that.

The rear cover of the Tuff Torq hydro does seal with sealant/gasket maker from a tube. Rebuilt mine a while back and no gasket is made for that area where the rear cover mates to the main case.

I got everything I ordered but the seat and it was just shipped yesterday. They forgot to ship the decal that goes inside the hood with the hood, but they are going to ship it on Monday. I got the rear fender pan, lock up pedal, and forward pedal locally. Total on all this so far is about $850. Also got 2 gal of low vis Hygard and filter along with a gal of synthetic Rotella and engine filter.

Here it is a year later and I'm back to work on the 455. I went to use it a few weeks ago, and there was a big pool of hydro oil under it. Filled it back full, and as soon as the oil got warm, there was a small stream of oil leaking out the PTO seal. The lockup and contol lever seals were leaking a bit too. I had bought a low hour complete transaxle a while back for $200, and just got them swapped out.

This past weekend, I finely got the seat and foot pans powder coated.

Waiting on a couple of parts from Deere before I can get the pans installed. Parts should be here Thursday or Friday. Still need to do some cleaning on the fuel tank and I hope to have that done before they show up. Ordered new feet mats too.

I washed it once, but I found a few spots I missed. It'll get another good washing tomorrow.

What are you going to do with the original trans out of that? Is that the dual range? Where ya at? I am actually looking for a hydrostat drive for another project. :D
Plan is (subject to change) to replace all the seals and keep it for a spare. It's a single gear with lockup. The 2 speeds were in the 420's and 430's
I'm in the Kansas City area.

Got a little more done today. Painted the front frame area.

With the decal installed, I started installing the feet pan. The left foot mat was back ordered and hopefully be here early next week, so I can get the seat pan on.

The seat suspension was pretty wore out, so I've ground all the welds and dissembled it. I got some 3/4" 12L14 and will turn new bushings on my lathe that will fit tight into the bores. Then I'll drill small holes in all of the ends of the four rods, and cross drill them for grease. Will drill and tap all the holes for zerks.

What's left of the bushings. They're supposed to look like the 2 at the bottom.

The wear on the rods

You got a real good deal, sort of.

Great bones anyway, the transaxle leak softened the great deal somewhat.

Looking forward to your progress as I sit here on the front wheel of my 455 that won’t start. I don’t think I’m getting fuel to the engine. I guess it’s time to pull rear pan and see ifthe transfer pump is working or not.

Got the new bushing made and installed. Also cut the new rods to length. They're a little long, but I'll cut the extra off when I get it all welded back together. My machinist buddy talked me out of doing the zerks.

Rods for the seats look great.

I had to put a new fuel transfer pump in the tank, pretty easy other than 2 bills for the pump.

I did clean and grease seat adjustment rails while I had the seat off.

Enjoy the picks.
