Hi, I just bought a used Husqvarna YTH2246 2007 and the blades don't seem to turn or engage with this linkage bar attached (picture attached)

When it is attached and the blade engagement handle is pulled all the way the belt is loose and the blades don't spin. However, I take the rod off and the blades spin like normal with the exception that when I disengage the blades, a howl can be heard. I assume it's the padding on the spring loaded bracket holding the idler pulley that's connecting to the blade pulley and making the noise.

My question is, do I need this linkage rod connected to the deck?

I'm glad to see you got it functioning.

That is the mower blade brake. The proper function would be stopping the blades as soon as you disengage the clutch (the belt going loose). That part was working, it sounds like.

The only reason for it, is to stop the blades in a controlled manor when you are done mowing. The howl you heard sounds to me as you described it being the blades spinning after the belt has been disengaged, causing the blades to spin down at there own speed. So here is the rub,

If you don't operate with the brakes for the blades, try and keep people from being tempted to place their feet under the deck during the spin down, and be aware that you won't have immediate control of the blades in case of an operator error or emergency.

Other than that and the very safety conscious crowd giving you the corner eye or worse, not having nice things to say about you, you and your rider will be fine, and may all the rest of its grass cutting days serve you well.

Just a thought or two, didn't want to see you hanging. :tango_face_wink:
