I have to say that these pictures do look like it could be the 12.5 / 9 HP Kohler....somebody probably added the fuel pump ...Whirley...what do you think?
Hey KMIFF...there is a phone# on the air filter ...I would try calling it and see if you can talk to someone who can better help you positively ID the engine...any way...glad it worked out

Mark.. I think the engine came from a tractor that had a tank under the seat.. like the LT series.. it may b a 15 HP with the original 12 HP shroud on it.. at one time I had a bunch of the Commands.. I do know that the shrouds will fit each other.. I did a lotta engine swaps on Craftsman tractors that had a bad B&S engine.. my Sabre was one of them.. it got a 12 or a 13 HP.. I even did a swap on my one LT from a 15 to a 16 HP.. that engine didn't have a fuel pump on it.. I put a vacuum one on it.. got the vacuum source from the dip stick tube.. used a spare steel cross over tube to get the gas to the carb..

addin a fuel pump to a engine that had none from factory will put the engine with shavings in the oil gally.. this is a no-no in my book.. the taps should b metric also.. all of the Commands had the mount for the pump in the castin stage.. some were never mounted & left blank..

Both the 9 and 12.5 have same bore, stroke and compression ratio the engine for the 38 is CV12.5-1215
the 9hp on the 30s is a CF12.5-1216S..both at 3350 RPMs ......according to tractordata...I don;t know if the numbers really denote any difference except which tractor it go plunked into....with these critical specs the same..they should both produce the same HP

I agree on all of this.. maybe the carbs have a difference in them by less gas gettin thro them..
