I have a BX1860 which is my first tractor - runs great, strong, mows great all in all im super satisfied. But since its my first i have no reference to go by. At startup it isnt a quick turn of the key. I need to keep the key turned probably about 3-4 seconds before it starts. I usually turn the key to the on position and let it sit for maybe ten seconds as i believe this warms up the glow plug. Is that normal?

Also it seems to have a rough shutdown. lots of vibration. I always throttle down on shutdown. Of course this is the only tractor i ever shut down so it may be super smooth. Any insight on that?

sounds pretty normal to me... one trick I've found helps if its cold (<50F) is to turn the key all the way to the start and let it crank over a half a second to a second, then back off to the glow position for a 10 count. Should fire right up when you key back into the start position!

About that shutdown, my BX2350 has me convinced that it hates its hood, every time I shut 'er down it tried to shake it off!!! :swow: :swow:

sxs191 & JRC are spot on.
You should see a glowplug indicator on your dash when you enegize them.
You may want to play around with the time you have them energized.
In warm temps (50 degrees and warmer) my old BX23 needs about 5 sec's of glowplug to start.
In cold cold temps it can take a couple 10 sec applications to get it going.

Diesel engines by their very nature like to be hot (up to operating temperature) to run at it's most efficient mode and it takes alot of fuel to get a cold diesel started. Since theres no choke to help enrich the fuel entering the cylinder (no carb = no vaccum = choke no-workie :D ) most diesel manufacturers have added glowplugs to their engines inorder to help getting a cold engine started and running.
Glowplugs draw alot of current from the battery so finding the the sweet spot where the least amount of glowplug time to start is good for the entire power plant.

Rough shutdown on our little diesels is normal too. You can lessen the abruptness by upping the rpm a bit from low idle to the point where it just smooths out then shut it down. This is also a good spot for starting too.

Anyways, thats probably more info than you asked for but what the hey, I get on a roll sometimes :D

The "ON" position does not engerzize the glow plugs. Turn the key on and then just a lettle more...you will see the glow plug indicator come on, on the dashboard. Give it just a few seconds then turn to start.

My 2660 did not give me any problems during the coldest winter we have had in 15 years. Never ran the glow plugs more than 5 seconds and started right up. Yes shutdown is a big vibration, but normal.

lots of information, but it seems to be good information...i'll have to try that rpm trick next time i shut my 2660 down
