The rings are a common spline shaft retainer. They are typically about 2/3 to 3/4 the diameter of the shaft.

The shaft should not experience much axial loading during use, but without the ring they can walk out of the drive unit. The retainer ring provides just enough force to keep them in place, but then allow you to easily pop them out for servicing.

I've never worked on a 7020 front end, but I do like the suggestion of getting it completely up in the air, then running the front end unit without the axle shafts and wheels in place. Either the noise is still there ... or not. Then you can use a mechanics stethoscope to ... carefully ... hunt down the noise.

The gear box "fluid" is more like gray mud with silver glitter in it. Houston I think we've got a problem. I'm going to try to flush it as best I can, but I think this thing is done for.

What can I destroy if I flush this thing, put it all back together, and drive it. I really don't want to drop the skid plate, but I don't see any other way to get that thing out of there. Any advice?

And lastly...

How much is a new Hilliard gear box? Do I have any other options as far as gear boxes go? Where can I get a new one?

Thanks for all the help gang. I'll take some more pics of the mud that drained out of the Hilliard.

This is the funniest thing EVER. I just got off the phone with Ingersoll/Eastman. After some chatting, the woman suggested I come to THIS FORUM for more advice. Now this is a great place, but you would think that the people that are representing the brand would have a slightly better idea than to go to a message board for customer assistance!

After I stopped laughing, they gave me a price of $938 for the gear box.

That shut me up.

The local mechanic that used to sell Ingersoll said he has a 6018 at his shop. He said I should swing on by and look how the 2WD is set up if I want to go that route. It's looking like a good idea!

I'm scared to rip it out. I think you have to drop the skid plate. I was thinking of flushing it out with 90W a few times, and seeing if that helped. Or do you think now that I have it this torn apart, I might as well just take it out? I'm afraid I can get the gear box open, but not sure I can put it back together the way I found it. I really don't know what I'm doing!

I think a more methodical troubleshooting approach would save you time, money and aggravation. You should be able to engage the 4wd now that you have the axles off and see if it is making noise or exhibits any other signs of problems. If not then you just saved yourself a lot of time and effort. Unfortunately these units weren't used on many Ingersoll tractors so few of us have had to do any service on them. I presume that with a little search on the internet you could locate some other technical resources.

I don't see where you have any choice but to get the box out of there and open it up. Diagnos the problem and go from there. Further operation will mean more damage likely. Contact Hiliard directly with any questions or advise. The gearbox itself is a standard model that Hiliard manufactures and parts from them or a Hiliard distributor will be much cheaper than Ingersoll. I a not trying to cut Ingersoll out of the parts picture but you need to protect your own wallet sometimes ....

It's the gear box. Every other part is fine. I flushed the gear box and lots of metal came out. I put everything back together, and now when I go forward, something in the front end squeals like bare metal on metal. I shut it down, walked away, and am having a beer. I think a brick of C4 is all that this thing needs!

I agree that I would next contact Hilliard and see if you can get a parts and/or service manual. They may have some technical support who can advise you on the likely problem/cost involved in getting it back together.

I agree 100% with restmycase about dealing with Hilliard directly, I wouldn't even worry about cutting out Ingersoll out of the parts picture at this point. Hey, they (Eastman / Ingersoll) asked you to contact a message board for advice :duh: I still can't get over that one, but I'm sure its because when Eastman took over the company several years ago, they discountinued that particular model for their own reasons I'm sure.

After doing a little research about Hilliard Mfg. I came up with this link, http://www.hilliardcorp.com/view.php?id=FDS-1
I'm not sure if this is the exact front diff as your tractor, or maybe you already came across this link, but may give you an idea of what your up against, if and when you decide to rebuild it.

I believe they also use these style of front differentials in those compact utility vehiciles everybody seems to be making nowadays, so obtaining the necessary parts may not be as difficult as you think and dealing with the Hilliard company directly, or through one of thier authorized parts distributors may save you a few bucks.

I did some digging around for you.. call Hilliard directly and you will be able to buy that series 256 front gearbox:drunkie: for $475.00 brand new from them. I think the womans name is tammy.. not sure though.

850.00 for a rebuilt unit.. thats nuts.

Hopefully when youget that axle back in it solves the probs you are having..

Bob

My advise would be to contact hilard yourself and try to locate some repair literature. You might only need one part to fix this thing. Definetly try to track down this girl named tammy and get on her good side. 475.00 for the complete unit, you are getting off easy with that one.

Best thread ever. Don't give up on that 7020!!! I mean it!!!! Once you get these issues sorted out, you'll be glad you have it.

However, if it starts driving you COMPLETELY nuts, you're more than welcome to ship it to me. I promise I'll take good care of it. ;)

It looks like a tough built unit , it should be worth getting it working right , even if you have to park it till you have money , a FEL and a rugged log grapple nice
