Hi, this is my first post to the site. I am in the UK and I have a very small collection of Bolens and Wheelhorse tractors. Information and parts are not very easy to find in the UK.

I have just bought a Haban Flail MO 503A to fit to use on one of my Bolens tractors. The attachment is missing the pivot bracket. I have downloaded the manual from the reference site which is very useful and shows a picture of the pivot bracket but it does not give me any dimensions.

Does anyone else on this group have a 503A (or similar) and can give me the dimensions of the pivot bracket (pictures would be helpful too) so that I can make one. :hide:

The knives are 'J' shaped. Pictures I have seen of similar attachments have flat/spade knifes. Are they the correct knifes?

If anyone from the UK reads this - I am always interested in expanding my collection if anyone knows of any Bolens/Wheelhorse tractors/attachments for sale - but don't tell the wife!

Thanks
Iain

:Welcome1: Iain. Glad to see that Bolens tractors are cherished across the pond, too. Sixchows may be able to help you. There is not much about tubeframe Bolens' that he does not know, and he might even have the same or a similar Haban unit.

Iain,

Can't help you on your question, but I wondered what kind of PTO hp is required for that Haban? I've heard flail mowers need a lot.

Here's a tracing of the pivot arms. You will need (2) of these and they are welded to the outside edge. All(3) pieces are 3/8" thick. The tracing shows the exact angle with which the crossmember is mounted. The cutout section of the crossmember is on the section above the arms.

:Welcome1: Iain Hope you enjoy the site and post some pictures of your collection.

Thanks guys, I learn something new here everyday! When I think of flail mowers I always thought of the monsters on municipal tractors 3PH's, and in some cases, on articulating arms. How does the Bolens/Haban unit cut, say, compared to a mid mount mower?

Thanks sixchows for the detailed information and pictures.

Can you tell be what the distance is between the holes and the distance the holes are from the ends of the bracket?

I found out how heavy it was the hard way. It was loaded in the back of my car attached to the bucket of a mini digger. When I got home I found I could hardly move it and did not stand a chance of lifting it on my own. In the end it stayed in the car for a week until I got a hand lifting it out. All week the headlights of the car were lighting up the trees rather than the road ahead. :banghead3

My Bolens collection consists of a 1000,1054,H16, a 1050 and H16 (with a 1050 rear end) in bits and a 850 parts tractor. The 1054 has the optional hydro. lift so I expect I will use the flail on the H16 or 1054.

Thanks Dutch-NJ the picture is exactly the type of knives my attachment has. Each knife is in two parts.

Do you know why different knife types are available? Is one type better than another for cutting different types of undergrowth? What is my knife type designed for?

Thanks
Iain

Those sketches are tracings of the actual parts that make up the bracket. They may be off slightly due to the width of the pencil point, but should be almost exact. If you measure from the end of the bracket to the center of the hole and drill a 5/8" hole it should be in the right place.

Can you print out the sketch and use it as a template?
