Found a nice X500 for $2400...290 hours and in excellent condition. Probably gonna pick it up Thursday.

Any quirks about these I should know?

Should the trans fluid be changed, because I'm sure the owner hasn't done it if it is changeable.

Yes, change the hydro's fluid and filter. Even if the previous owner change it, it will offer you some peace of mind. I have an X530 and have been very happy with it.

Only problem was the bearings in the idler arm on the 54" deck. The one that has the double pulley to transfer the power from tractor to the deck. Had 3 sets of factory bearings fail under warranty. I put a grease zerk in that and pulled the inner seals to allow grease to get into the bearings after the last one failed. No problems since. A great tractor for sure

I love mine. Only issues I have had were the fuel sender failed at around 1 year and was replaced under warranty, and the original seat cracked at around 1.5 years and was replaced under warranty as well. Second seat just began to crack this year after over 5 years of being on the tractor, and it is out of warranty now so if I replace it, it will probably be with an aftermarket seat off of ebay. Other than that only small stuff, like lost cotter pins on the gauge wheels and one on the linkage for the secondary rocker arm for the front lift for the snow plow. I did just replace the gauge wheels this year after 7 years and 350 hours, but my yard grows rocks so I consider that normal wear.

The X500 model is different from the other models in the X500 series in that it does not have a hydro filter to change. There is a cover plate in the same spot where the others have a filter, but there is no filter inside and there are no hydraulic lines going there, so adding a filter will not accomplish anything.

Mines been a solid machine so far but only have ~70 hours on it.
Well I picked it up and it is pristine. Like...brand new. I was told "excellent condition" but the owner was really underselling himself.

Best part...he kept a hand-written maintenance log...something I've never seen on any used equipment I've ever bought. Every service was done on the dot...and he even did the initial hydro fluid change at 60 hours that basically nobody bothers to do.

So I think it was worth 2400.

I will post pictures when it is light out.

Solid lawn tractor! Good price! Enjoy!
Had one and loved it. Great tractors!
Got my 2009 used with 200 hrs last spring and its been solid, mainly in lawn mowing duty. Quite robust and built for ground engagement. You got a more-than-fair deal.

Watcha gonna do with it?
I loved mine great machine! Best of luck I'm sure you'll find many uses for it and will enjoy every minute with it!

I dunno, probably just drink beer and drive it around.

Watch it there... I changed the hydro fluid on mine at 53 hours, so that makes me a nobody?

Sorry! Well that's what I get for making assumptions! "Because when you assume, you make an *** out of u and me" :sidelaugh
Had an x500. Really loved it. Just wanted a little bigger with a few more features. Great GT

Be careful not to **** any of your neighbor's off if you are going to drink and mow. My father in law had the police called on him for drinking a beer while cutting his yard. The police officers told him it was a neighbor that called and not to drink in the yard. :sidelaugh
He was pretty ****** off about it. He has always drank beer while mowing and has lived there since the early 80's

Did he kindly inform the police to go away?

the X500 is a good tractor and a less than 300 hours for under $2500 sounds pretty decent to me

I'm no drinker myself, but that neighbor of your dad's needs to GET A LIFE:sidelaugh

No, the X500 model itself has never had a hydro filter. All of the other models within the X500 series, the X530, X534, X540 and X590 do have them.
