Yet another 10590 M getting some work

4748 Views 42 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  LawnboyKS
Seems to be M series month around here, and I brought my 10590 home from storage yesterday and pulled the engine last night. It has some sort of goveneor issue, internal I suspect, and it has had a problem with dropping spark and not wanting to start for years. Iv'e worked and worked on it to no avail. Coil didn't fix the spark issue and it would even do it with the sensors disconnected. The gov. issues I never tackled... Anyway, I put a pretty lowball offer on the NOS 10590 engine on Ebay and the seller took it... So I'm cleaning up th deck, which has really good paint for it's age and how much I used and abused it back in the day! I bought this one brand new from the dealer back in '95 or so! Need to find something that will clean the old grunge off the paint, and not fade the paint out... The wheels are from a Toro proline, and I want to clean them up and paint them orange. I'm thinking about putting a commercial fuel tank on it and painting the green pieces on the shroud over the air cleaner and muffler (black) and turning this into a faux commercial model.

It does seem to be the month of the M's.
Whats up with the wheels? Did you have a problem with the self propell and stuck those on there? Havent seen any like that.
It looks to be in good shape for having done commercial duty for you.
Awesome wheels.....My all time favorite wheel. I never thought to put them on a LB before...but then again I'm mainly using prolines so I don't have a reason to put some on a LB.

That plastic is tough to paint...I tried the very same thing and it looked good for awhile but the paint scratches off easily....or at least it did for me....you guys are much more talented than I when it comes to doing stuff though....

Only real problem I had was that the plastic ones were prone to breaking on the rears. I had a Proline I bought cheap and I put 2 new drive wheels on it and then ended up not using it, so I robbed the wheels off of it once I learned they also fit on the LB mowers. This was 10 to 12 years ago...

I wonder if it's the type of plastic? I've seen the "Fusion" paint for plastics and I figured it would work, but I really don't want something that will just scratch or flake off.

I got the engine today! Pulled the wheels apart tonight and started scrubbing on them, after taking the hammer to a few of the halves to make them round again, lol. Just getting the grunge off the white paint, or what's left of the paint, in order to be able to paint them chevy orange is pretty tricky. Wire brush, parts washer, and a sore wrist didn't get them clean... Going to take a SOS pad to them next. The deck shined up pretty nice. Some chips and scuffs in the paint, and the rear where the catcher sits has a lot of peeling, but overall it looks **** good for it's age and miles!

If you haven't done it yet, I recommend a repacking of the trans. Tricky but worth the effort and insurance to help keep failure low.

Not a bad idea... I was looking at the trans while I was cleaning and pondering tearing it apart. What type of grease is best to use in those? What about it makes it tricky? Just cleaning it all and getting it back together the right way?

Basic #2 lithium base grease like all other LB transmissions require. You have the detent check ball that locks the gears 1,2,3 with a small spring tab. The steel ball is smaller than a B.B. You also have a couple bushings on the axle that must rest one way when you put the case halves back together. I've done 2 of them still bolted in, and others here have done them with the axle removed which may make it easier. This trans is easy to overfill with grease. Too much can cause it not to lock in gear correctly or jump out of gear you could say. Also need to prep and reseal the case with a very thin bead of RTV silicone. Make sure you read the manual before you do it for some tips.

Black Fusion is what I used. I was dissatisfied with the result but perhaps I didn't prep the plastic very well. I just cleaned it real good and started spraying..lol.

I guess I DO have a service manual! Thanks for the tips, it sounds pretty complicated! I've never had one opened up... The too much/too little grease is the tough one. Hopefully the manual specifically lays out how many ounces it needs.

Well, clean it good and paint... I don't think there is much more to it than that and if that failed it may be a weird type of plastic that paint just can't bond too.

Echoman, well I dug through my manuals and I have nothing about these tuff torque transmissions. My M series manual is for the older models, not 10590/91, and doesn't show or tell anything about the internals of the trans. I looked through my service school notes and in '93 I think, there's mention of the them and it says there was a worksheet/book covering it and they got hands on training with them in that session, but I don't have any of the workbooks :( I don't even have a reference to how much grease is to be used.

I got a parts break-down off of partstree for reference on the order of everything, but that's all I've found.

So the Prolines will work on an LB. Interesting. I might go that route in the future. You wouldnt happen to have a part number for those would you?

They will work on the Toro-Lawn-boys ('93-'96), not the pre-toro models ('89-'92), if that makes sense... In other words they will fit on the 10590/10591 models, but not a M21ERB for example, because they used different drive gears.

I'm having no luck locating the part number for the wheels, but they are the ones that fit most all of the 21" proline models.

OK, thanks. I have a m21bmr, but I did the tranny swap with a 10590, so I should be good!

Just brace yourself for the prices... Probably looking at around $150 for the set of 4, 2 drive and 2 standard. The lawn boy orange wheels are another option, for about the same price, but I'm unsure of the availability of them now. I bought a couple sets of the drive wheels from es_bob on ebay last year. If you have a good toro/lawnboy dealer near by, you may be able to order them, they were for the LB commercial model that had a very short life on the market...

The can I bought is a rustoleum brand for plastics, and there's a warning on it that it may not bond well to polyethylene plastics. I pulled the top green part off the air filter cover and see it has the letters "HP PE" embossed under the part number. I'm going to guess "PE" is for polyethylene. That would explain the problem, and create a problem for me!

Here's the inside of my transmission. The grease is on the dry side, doesn't look like it was getting on the gear teeth much anymore. I think I'm going to clean them the best I can in the parts washer without taking them all apart. Looks like a lot of "fun" to reassemble them all otherwise! The little bearing is captured on the end of the shift catch, as long as I don't knock it loose, lol.

Here's the parts breakdown I snagged off of partstree, if anyone needs it.

Sounds like I'll be needing to do this.

Addition: If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the actual transmission is the same as the older. I believe the only change is the axle. In theory, the Lawn-Boy M Service Manual(rev. 90) should have applicable information for this style of transmission. I contacted Tuff-Torq, so we'll see.
