Hi folks,

Just discovered that my X748 has a piece missing from the frame where the transmission bolts onto it. The opposite side also has a a hairline crack that appears to be following a similar route to that of the missing piece. Has anyone seen this before and do you think it is possible to repair, or should I replace?

IMO that would need to be fixed. Is it under warranty? That should be fixed by John Deere looks like something was defective with that. I would remove that bolt and weld a piece of angle iron down that seem and drill the hole and replace that bolt. But that me.

Some other guys here will have more expertise on this more than I do. Maybe I'm not seeing this right. It would drive me nuts until I got that fixed

Hi Mcgee10, I purchased this tractor second hand a year ago, but only noticed the cracked frame yesterday after stripping her down. I doubt I will be able to make a warranty claim as the tractor is more than 10 years old, and I am not the original owner. Will be great to get other members advice as to whether this is has been seen previously and if people have attempted to fix something like this.

Zegga, That's definitely repairable, and HIGHLY recommended! A piece of angle iron welded in with a few holes drilled and you're in! As far as the crack in the frame, drill a hole, maybe 3/16" at each end of the crack. This will prevent the crack from "migrating" farther. After drilling, it could be welded from the outside of the frame, but really not necessary. Bob

I bought a 445 that the bolt heads were snapped off. Frame was fine. Must be a high stress area. I now frequently keep an eye on my X485 after seeing the broken bolts on my 445. But yes have someone weld in a piece of angle iron and it will be better than new.

You can't just lay a piece of angle iron in there. The sharp corner of the angle iron would need to be ground to match or clear the radius of the frame rail. It would be better to use a section of formed steel that has the same radius and would nest in there perfectly. I would look for a junk JD LT1XX or LX2XX and cut a section of the frame out to use as a doubler.

There is a lot more going on than many think. Obviously there has been flexing in that area and probably some built in stress risers where the cracks originated. Adding more steel probably just moves the main stress to another area and cracks could start in that area. Still, This has to be fixed and I think my idea of a section of formed C-channel from another frame would be the best bet. You could even bolt it in place after welding the existing cracks.

I've used several cast off JD frames and sections in some of my projects which has always worked out great.

As was said, a formed piece of material would be better, 3/16" possibly with maybe a couple of small gussetts inside the formed angle?.
There looks to be a few existing holes that could be used for bolting to the frame. If you do get it welded, remember welding is not the catch all, depending on how and where it's welded so don't go overboard. More is not necessarily better..............Mike

I was told years ago that those breaks were the result of driving diagonally thru a ditch causing a bunch of frame twist.

The 325/335/345 and GX series have a rubber mounting arrangement for the transmission. I'm surprised that the bigger units don't. The frame and transaxle mounting either have to be massively strong or designed with some give .

I can't quite visualize the area, any chance of a long shot? Being a weldor by trade, I wouldn't hesitate to repair it and attempt to make it better.........Mike
It's where the transmission's axle housings bolt to the frame.

I can see how that could happen after many years of use. I was surprised at how my frame flexes in situations like that the first few times I saw it happen; I would have expected a much stiffer design for this heavy a machine. My frame will flex enough that the hood pops up around the rear edge where it fits around the radiator housing, when I cross a ditch at an angle. Guess I need to inspect my frame to see if I have any issues, after 1400 hours of use.

I have similar cracks on both sides of my 2012 X749. One of these days I will repair, but a bigger project than I have time for. Mine hasn’t propagated or had a part fall off like yours though. Makes me thing I should prioritize the repair a bit!

Just purchased a 07 X748. I somehow missed this during the pre-purchase inspection. The frame was completely covered in oil and dirt and the lighting wasn't the best, but all in all I didn't expect it when I found it. I couldn't believe it, the right hand side of the frame was cracked completely free and only the weight of the tractor was keeping it on the axle. The left side was cracked about an inch and a half on each side. The replacement frame is on order and will be here next week sometime. :banghead3:banghead3:banghead3
