X530/X540 tiller options? Costs? Pics?

16671 Views 32 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  bmurph44
It has been a while since I started a thread and I've had this question in mind for a while now. What tiller do you use with you X530/X540 (or other X500-series) tractor? Did you buy it new? If not, were did you find it?

I'm really intrigued with the idea of adding a tiller to my growing stable of attachments in the future, but I will need to hunt for a "find", since the budget will be a factor. So, what should I expect in terms of cost? :hide:

As you know, our forum members all like pictures, so please post what you have! Action shots (and videos) encouraged! But "still shots" are good too! Thanks in advance... :thanku:

My primary use might be to 'till a beach in the summer. Two or three passes on my beach would equal about 150 feet or so of beach. I am assuming that if this use worked out well for me, my neighbors would soon be added to the list of beach front to see service, so maybe another 450-500 feet per session, or so.

Thanks for your reply Sergeant. Yes, tilling sand will be the primary task. You are correct that a $2,500 hydraulic tiller might be considered an extreme extravagance for my purposes! Heck, just having a any tiller on a Deere to do the job, instead of a walk-behind, probably should be considered a "luxury". Hey, we only live once, so we might as well do it right and have some fun!

Can I find a mechanical tiller "used"? What should I be looking for and what will it cost?

Well, I found this one "in state" (no others recently). It was used on a GT235. It looks cosmetically to be in good shape, but I haven't seen it in person. Asking $700 and has been available since the 2nd (maybe a pricing problem?). I've still got some research to do as to the mounting parts I will need. Comments?

Offer $500 and see what happens. I have a parts list for what you'll need to attach it to the hydro lift on your X530. It's about $300 for the parts unless you make some substitutions or JD makes a separate kit (which I haven't heard of). Go here to get an idea of what's involved in the set up process. http://manuals.deere.com/cceomview/OMM153409_C8/Output/Index.html?tM

FYI

I purchased a used 30 mechanical tiller from a guy on Craigslist a few weeks. I purchased my lift kit parts from greenfarmparts. It took a week and a half to get them, but I got them all. It looks as though yours will take more to hook up than mine did since my tractor is a 2001 345.

I finally got to use it yesterday and am totally impressed with the simplicity of the machine and the pretty bed row it makes. Works like a champ. Dang sure beats the walk behind tiller from Tractor Supply that I have been using.

I hope you are able to get hooked up with every thing you need. You will not be disappointed in the performance.

Thanks for the input! Much appreciated. I need to understand the needed parts before I buy it.

I purchased a new JD 42" Hydraulic Tiller recently. Pretty expensive at $2826 CDN (pre-tax). I did alright though on a new X540 getting $932 off list price.

Too much going on right now, and so, I haven't completed this one yet. I'll get there though.

I still have not purchased the necessary parts to hook mine up to my tractor yet. I wanted to get in on this thread and stay current.

I wonder if one can just go the dealer and buy the "bag of parts" thats listed in the manual and get everything all at once?
Hi, I have a x530 and a lead on a JD tiller (the label on the tiller says 30" TILLER - 200). I see that several members have put a 30" tiller on their x530. I have some questions if someone has the time to help.
1. I looked in the JD manual and I see parts need to be added to the tractor frame (Bolt Stop, Center Mounting Pin, Rear Frame Mounting Hardware, other?). Can this be ordered as a package? If not does anyone have a parts list with part #s?
2. Posts have described replacing of the clamps on the tiller frame with new ones. Does anyone have a part number for those? It looks like they just bolt on is that correct?
3. Is the bracket on the top of the tiller body that is used to lift the tiller correct or does that need to be changed? If so do you have a part #?
4. In the John Deere brochure for x530 attachments it shows an adjustable rod that connects the bracket mentioned above to the x530 hydraulic lift. Is that the same as the one that comes with the tiller or do I need to order that as well? If so do you have a part#?
5. Last question, do I need a different belt to connect to the x530 drive pulley?
Thanks so much for your help.

Plan on spending 300 or 400 dollars (maybe more) for the necessary brackets, lifting parts, belts etc to get it up and running, I have my 30 tiller sitting in my shop waiting for me to get all the parts and some time to get it together.

Here's my thread.

SnakeMed: Did you ever buy a tiller? I would like to have one but our weather has been so screwy the last few years I'm not certain how much I would have used it. If you buy one I'll help offset the cost by renting it from you once or twice a year. :thThumbsU

Hi Mike! No, I haven't. Either my timing has been off, or the units I've found for sale are not the right value. As others have pointed out, the attachment hardware can be a chunk of cash, so there is a bit to consider when determining your total cost of ownership. For my purposes, I'd only use it a few times a season, so it isn't critical that I rush out to buy one... I will keep looking. Maybe over the winter, or in the spring, I will find one.

I'm late to the party, but maybe the manual will help answer your questions? http://manuals.deere.com/cceomview/OMM153409_C8/Output/Index.html?tM

Answers as best I can...
1. No kit that I know of, you have to order each part and that came out around $350 in 2012.
2. If the tiller you look at has the clips on the side, then you need to order the top clips.
3. Bracket on top does indeed lift the tiller.
4. Rod comes with a new tiller.
5. Not sure if the older belts fit on the X500 Series...

I have a part list to make a used tiller work, if you want a copy then PM me an email address.
