X360 Won’t Start - No Spark

Thought I would see if you guys can help me. I went to help my SIL do maintenance to the X360 I had given him. After changing oil & filter, cleaning the air filter (paper filter was extremely clean, a little dirt/grass on the foam filter) greased deck spindles, steering, and steering cylinder, we tried to start it. Battery was low, so put the charger on it. It finally cranked, but would not fire. I picked up new plugs to replace the old ones (lots of carbon on them). Even tried a little starting fluid. Fuel was being pumped into carb. We tried starting it several times without even a hint at firing. The gas didn’t smell bad. It was 40-50* in the shed, cool but not really cold.

That’s when I pulled the right plug and held it against the valve cover while we cranked it. There was NO SPARK! SIL said it back fired (really loudly) when he started it before taking it to the shed, but it started right up after and he drove it to the shed. He may have even started it on the way to the shed after taking off the chains.

At this point, it’s 2 hours away and I’m planning to call the local dealer to see if I can get it in, but would appreciate any suggestions you might have.

You should have checked for spark at both plugs. If no spark on both plugs you could try unplugging the kill wires from the coils. It is very unlikely that both coils failed simultaneously. The kill wire is the only thing that can prevent spark from the coil. On a 2-CYL engine I believe there is one or two diodes in series with the kill wire.

Funny, same question the guy at the desk asked. It was supposed to be 3-4 days to get to it, 2-3 weeks to have them pick it up, but I dropped it off yesterday about 1:30 and just got a call and said it was done and for about $120 for a bad electronic module. Can’t say enough about how good the service was at John Hoeksema Inc. in Holland, MI. Small family owned business. Good prices and obviously quick service.

Picked up the tractor. The electronic control unit (module) number was AM141075. I asked where it was located and the guy tried to show me, up under the dash, not on the engine, but couldn’t find it. Looked like it had a small 6-8 pin connector on the housing with potting on the other side. Anyway, it seems to have fixed it and it’s back where it belongs and even got to put the deck on so al in all, a great day.

Thought I would post a link for an X300 schematic:
https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums...-x300-starting-pto-problem-2.html#post2364943
which shows an interlock module that would cause lose of spark to both plugs. That would explain why it worked before parking and not after. The link also speaks of the loud backfire like my SIL heard when he last started it.

Here’s another post about an X310 with no spark and loud bang.
