X 720 w/ Special Edition Pkge.

I am about to take delivery of a new X 720 with the Special Edition Package. I will primarily be using this to push snow right now. My dealer tells me at the last minute that you can not add wheel weights to this model due to the way the wheel has been manufactured. She took it upon herself to order the Suitcase weight bracket and some suitcase weights. This tractor is replacing a stolen 140 that I had for a number of years, when it was taken it was set up with the blade on it and wheel weights, and lug tires. I had seen very favorable comments on this site about the HDAP tires in the snow. Two questions are, is this true that I am going to have to use the suitcase weights instead of wheel weights, and is there a way that I can look at the serial number on this tractor and be able to tell the manufacture date of this tractor. Any feedback from anyone having one of these would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.:thanku:

Congrats, that is an awesome machine you are about to get hold of!

I hadn't heard that wheel weights can't be used on the X700 series. Hmmm. Some of the owners will chime in on that, I'm sure. It could be that the special "SE" rims don't accept the mounting bolts for the wheel weights.

But suitcase weights are a very nice way to add ballast, and traction. So she's not necessarily steering you wrong in that respect. Another option, is to have them "fill" the rear tires with a ballast fluid, like Rimguard. You can put a lot of fluid weight in those 26x12-12 HDAPs.

With filled tires, and some suitcase weights, you should be golden.

Congrats on the new tractor!
Since the SE package has a different rim it does require an adapter to attach rear wheel weights. The part number was BM21497 unless that has changed?
You should be fine with suitcase weights. I prefer the suitcase for the ease of removal but there can be advantages to wheel weights and filled tires too.

On the new tractors the Date of Manf (DOM) is printed on the same label with the serial number.

I have a X720, and I'm using my rim weights, but it's not a SE model.

I also added the 6 suit case weights with ballast in each rear AG tires.

I had those rim weights for years and after spending the extra $$$$$ for
a SE series, and find the rims weights couldn't be used, or a special bracket
has to be purchased, that would really get me POD.

How it all works?????? Still waiting for snow............:banghead3

Congrats on the new tractor! As said you just have to get the adapter and they will work with the SE pkg wheels.

I am going with the suit case weights as well just for the ease of taking them on and off.

Also then you can use the suit case weights on the front if you ever need to.

With the suitcase weights and the HDAP tires you will be fine.

i'm sure that the dealer is charging you the same price for the suitcases and bracket as she would for the wheel weights and adapters? tell her to order the adapters for the wheel weights you asked for originally....instead of what must be significantly more for the bracket and suitcases....

If you do decide go with the suitcase weights the next thing to consider is the bracket. The JD rear weight bracket lists for $140 and connects to the $100 Click-N-Go bracket. This is handy if you plan to get a rear bagger or other Click-N-Go mounted things.

If you are not needing this extra Click-N-Go ability you might consider an aftermarket bracket like the one in this eBay listing

well your dealer must've forgot to tell John Deere about this change!

If you go to John Deere's website you will see that the part number for the 72 lb rear wheel weight is BM17973 and the part number for the adapter for the special edition rims is BM21497.

maybe you need to direct your dealer to go online and do a build your own John Deere,you can still order it on the website.

My preference would be to go with the suitcase weights instead of the rear wheels weights. You'll cover up the rear wheels with the wheel weights and scratch the wheels up. Suit case weights are much easier to install and take off when you don't need them. slkpk

Sounds to me like you need 4wd....time for an X728!

Congrats :thThumbsU on the great purchase. I'm kinda of biased to the X720. As far as the weight, get it where you can. I just prefer wheel weights and filled tires, then utulize the back to balance out the rest. :trink39:

congrats on the tractor, you sure have the right machine for the job and you're going to have a lot of fun moving snow with it-

...but you might want to check be sure you are using the right dealer!
