What is recommended for winter oil? Considering mine uses oil, and I ended up using 50w race oil after trying 4 different oils this summer. I'm thinking that is too thick for the winter though. Is 15w40 acceptable in the winter? or 20w50? Then the operating temperature weight is still higher after the oil is warmed up, but thinner for cold starts?

Depends on a whole bunch of things such as how cold it gets where you are. Also it depends on how strong your battery is and the condition of every part of your starting system. If your tractor doesn't light fast in warm weather then it's going to be even more balky when the temps dip to sub-zero. If you think you are going to have issues, then put in 10W30 and check it once each hour of run time to get a handle on how fast it uses oil. Just make sure that you keep it topped up to the line all the time. If you think you can move to 15W40, then give it a go. A tractor that won't start is a useless tractor so focus right now on cleaning up wiring connections and load testing your battery. Better to have a running tractor that gulps a bit of oil than to have one that just won't spin over fast enough to light due to thick oil.

parked in 4 car garage, but not heated all the time.

Near Chicago, so single digits are possible, and likely. Right now she starts like a champ, short crank time, and battery is a new quality battery this year.

I think I'll start out with 15w40 since I have some left over that I tried this summer, and it consumed it quite well, as I later found out most of you stated would happen.

FWIW, keep in mind that the hyd system oil is also "chilly". The book recommends placing the trans in neutral and advancing the travel lever for a few minutes on cold starts to circulate and warm the oil.
I assume a full load on 0 degree oil creates some very hign pressures

EDIT: I should clarify, this is AFTER you get the engine running.
