One of the going theories is it will be a winter pattern resembling more what we had in the late 70's. We had a blizzard, a number of heavy snows and some pretty cold spells during that time. The best part was I don't recall any bad ice storms here during that time. It was also one of the rare occasions we had thundersnow. I'm good with that. Cold weather means less chance of ice storms compared to a mild winter here. Also I prefer white and frozen over brown and muddy when it's guaranteed to be cold and damp either way. :fing32:

That big purple swath is running right over my house. I'll be ready, as long as it waits until the leaves are all cleaned up. :)

Gee, their predicting snowy and cold in the North, very wet in the Pacific NW and warmer in the South. Gosh, I wish I could come up with in-depth weather analysis like that!

Looking at the map, it seems Southern New England prediction is about right. We had a nasty winter last year and historically a hard winter is followed by a mild winter.

Wet could also mean more icy conditions which we don't want!

I would even go further out on a limb and say there will be some sunny warm days and cloudy cold ones too! :ROF

Dark at night, with some light showing by morning.
I miss George Carlin's Hippie Dippy Weatherman: "... but there's a bunch of Russian ICBMs headed for the East coast, so I wouldn't sweat the thunderstorms!"

Maybe we should start a new Thread on Weather Prediction Terminology ??

The best one, I heard, about an approaching Thunderstorm: "Water will hit the pavement and accumulate"!! :biglaugh:
Elliot Abrams from Accuweather has a wit as dry as the Gobi Desert. A radio personality once asked him what kind of rain we were going to get. Without missing a beat Elliot replied "Well, it will be wet and it will fall from the sky".

I just pray if this winter is supposed to "resemble the patterns we had in the 1970's,that is not 1978 that comes back to haunt us!..ONE "Blizzard of '78" was enough for me to see in my lifetime...last winter was brutal here, and so was the one before--I dont think a mild winter ALWAYS follows a hardh one--I think now we get into 5 year "cycles" of bad weather....just like it seems to rain or snow for 3 days straight the past few years, and about a week between storms ,it used to be one day of storm, then it would clear up..now it seems we get stuck in a lousy weather pattern for days at a time..

I hope it rains more than snows this winter--I'm getting too OLD to be shoveling!..
I listen to WBZ AM, and hear Elliot Abrams on there in the mornings too...he's a bit strange!!..but funny sometimes..

I listen to "Night Line" with Dan Raye and the Steve Lavalley show after midnight often...its a good station, been listening to "BZ" since I was in diapers,my dad always watched channel 4 news every morning with Jack Chase and Don Kent, and listened to WBZ AM exclusively..if we tried changing the station we got our fingers slapped!...
I can still hear Jack Chase saying "So long--and make it a GOOD day"!..

When I was a kid my Dad and some other fellows were talking about the coming winter and speculating on what we were in store for. I ask Dad later how the Indian people always seemed to know what to expect in the way of winter.

Dad said he didn't know but told me to ask Mr Baughman, an elderly Indian man we often visited. Next chance I had I did this. Mr Baughman told me it was simple to tell if we were going to have a hard winter. He said "I just watch the white man, if he puts up a lot of firewood it means it's going to be a long, cold winter". Never cracked a smile.

Years later it dawned on me I had been set up by those two old guys.

What our family records tend to show for this area, been in the valley for something over 130 years now, is a twelve to fifteen year cycle for the weather. During that time the winter cold, rainfall and summer heat tends to reach peaks and lows. There also seems to be about a 40 year cycle that travels along with this so you end up with a long wave with a smaller wave traveling with it. Currently we should be entering a wet cycle with colder winters for the next few years. We'll see how it works out.

Mike
