Wife Says Get Another Mower, Is This Cub a Good One?

Its a 2135 HDS(I assume that is a standard two pedal hydro) with 600 hours. It has a 13hp Kohler, 42" deck and a double bagger. In very good to excellent(elderly owner passed away) shape, with a new battery. Always used to mow, never plowed with, etc. Asking price of $950, which I'm sure I can get down some.
Primary purpose will be to occasionally (when the 2320 is busy) mow about 1 acre of flat lawn, bag grass clippings for garden mulch, occasionally tow a cart and roller.
Anything to look for, its been properly maintained, so how many hours can be expected? I would think if we put 25 hours on a year, that would be a lot.:thanku: :thanku: :thanku:

:bump9: Anyone? Anyone?
Don't know much about Cubs, but keep the wife. Not many ever say those words.

That's a good reliable setup. Nice gas sipper Kohler single. I prefer the cut performance of a 3-blade 44" over the 2-blade 42", but for the right price 42" is just fine!!! That machine has got to be worth every bit of $800 I'd say.

Thanks. All great points. I'll keep you posted. Just got word I may be inheriting my MIL's JD185, so we'll see.
ColonyPark,
I will go out on a limb here as I am sure that I am going to get bashed for it, but after owning the machines that you have I do not think that you will enjoy a cub of that era. I have worked on numerous ones where the owners hit things in the lawn and the deck was tweaked enough to constantly eat belts, even when new in my experience they do not cut particularly nicely. The drivetrain on those machines is excellent, but the quality of cut and deck leave a lot to be desired. You would be much happier with the JD185 and its thick deck and kawi engine.

Thanks Eddy. Thats been kind of the prevailing thought in the back of my head and my wife's too. We have become spoiled with our machines. I got on that 185 a week or so ago, after not using it for a year or so and couldn't believe how small and "old" it seemed. It needs a new seat (don't they all?), but my out laws bought it new and have always maintained it. So, we decided to hold off and if we go that route, at least with the 185, I know what I am getting. The 185 would be free too, and you can't beat that. Then, when the 2320 is paid off, we could get a x495/x740 with a big old power flow bagger...:bannana:

Just for counterpoint, I bought a 2135 last year with the 38" deck and am very pleased with the cut and it is a good bagger. I don't change to high lift blades for bagging and it still does excellent. Maybe I just got lucky. The cut is considerably better than my 42" WH. On par with a Toro Proline wb.

First thing I did was make the machine able to mow in reverse, which is easy to do. My wife uses it a lot more than I do, but she can't handle the WH 8-speed.

:eek:mg: I hope you will not be disapointed if she pulls through:sidelaugh
I have been trying to talk her into a new mower for years (since my FIL past actually). It has now developed a gas leak (in the line I think), so I may have my best chance yet at getting her something new!
Why does your wife have to give her blessing on a new mower ...? Grow a set will you...
I have the 2130 AGS which is a 2135 with a standard shift, and it cuts like a dream. I have never had a mower that cuts as well as she does. It's comfortable, and easy to use. The 12.5 kohler command (that comes standard on both) has 900 hours on it and I can't even tell. Don't let the 12.5 confuse you that thing is a hoss. Plus they're shaft driven. And will likely outlast the ours you would get out of a new one, if it's been taken care of.Wonderful mower, and spectacular engine. I am even considering finding an old hydro out of a 2135 and making my 2130 a 2135.

My Vote, 2135 DacMan
