Hey all,
I broke the drive belt on my 18.5hp 2-cylindar 46" Craftsman rider last week. Took of the deck, removed the old belt. There was some string from the old belt wrapped around the tranny pully, got it out w/o too much problem. New belt went on fine. Used the mower yesterday, cut and moved as usual. After putting it back in the shed, I noticed oil dripping from the tranny purge tube. Not a lot, but it's never leaked before. I topped off the tranny with some 5W-20 I had hanging around, it took 3-4 oz. Then I purged the tranny by holding in the freewheel lever and moving the gear lever all the way fwd and reverse with the engine running. Some oil came out at the top of the purge tube again, and it seems to be leaking from there when I drive it as well. Def. leaking from the top cap area on the tube, I put a hose washer on the bottom just to make sure (as seen in pic). Any ideas? Some pix here.

Is that a breater tube? If so, you probably do not want to cap it off. Try installing a new hose.

Yes, it's a breather tube and it's never leaked before. Is there anything that might make it leak now? Other than a faulty tube, of course. That part doesn't even show in my Craftsman manual. Has anyone drained and refilled an 'non-serviceable' transmission? There's no drain plug, I was thinking about getting an oil pump and removing what I could, then topping off w/new oil.

I had a small amount of oil leak from the vent cap of the transaxle on my X300. Mine just have a cap - no hose. I think I may have over worke the transaxle causing it to overheat and expand the oil to the point it was coming out of the vent a little.

It doesn't seem like it in the pictures but is there any mud or grass caked onto the trans anywhere that may be causing it to overheat?

Is that a screw in the top? It should be vented to atmosphere with a check valve.
