Most auto mechanic multimeter have the tach option on them.
Make a search for "multimeter with tach" you'll have a dozen to choose from.

I think it will be twice as accurate. :sidelaughHi, can you use a 4 cylinder tach on a 2 cylinder engine?
I just bought one like this tonight(different brand)from Harbor Freight. It was $39.99 but i had a 20% off coupon :fing32:.I am using this hand held model here. It was about 72.00, works really good, you put a piece of reflective tape on a rotating part then you shot it with the lazer.
yup, i remember having one in the old days that counted sparks, makes sense.Go to this site and scroll down to the TECH-TACH TT-20K. It's a superb unit and works with 2-stroke as well as 4-stroke engines. It reads ignition pulses, displays up to 20,000 RPM, and updates are about 2 per second.
I have been using this tach for 15 years on 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines. It has been very accurate and reliable.this Briggs & Stratton 19200 Tachometer is cheap and accurate ~$20
