The wife and I have started mowing our 2 acres together, she gets the 2014 broadmoor, I get the 1990 craftsman. I'm ok with it. I'd like to convince her to sell the craftsman and get a little older simplicity to mow with. I'm thinking anything from the 70's up until 2000 model. My criteria is

Must say "simplicity"
Must have abundance of parts used or aftermarket, no rare birds
Nice cut of course
Don't care size of deck
Gear or hydro

I would probably look for something that needs work to keep price down. All my land is flat and simple.

Thoughts on which model to look for or which model/engine to stay away from?

So, all you want is a mower to help a 2014 Broadmoor mow two acres of grass?? Why does the Broadmoor need any help? Why not just do the trimming/edging while she mows?
I'm sorry for being difficult. The correct answer to your question is a hydro Sovereign.

It doesn't need help and I don't do trimming.

More of a fun mower

I have a 7112 from 1972 that has been a great tractor all these years. Could use a engine over haul now but it has a lot of hours on it.

I think the smaller foot draggers like my 1964 Landlord are a nice second tractor, small and short wheelbase gets into places a larger tractor cannot. Parts are easy to find and you cant beat that old cast iron long stroke Briggs engine. Pretty much any older Simplicity/Allis are a good machine. Shuttle transmissions can be a PITA but once you learn how to adjust them, your all set. I prefer either a gear drive or a hydro. Mike
