Hey gang. I just brought home a square fender John Deere 110. The tag reads T0641 144548M which appears to be a 1969. It doesn't have a deck but it does have a plow. There are a few things I am still waiting for the PO to dig out of his barn but for the most part it is very complete. It doesn't run yet but the motor does spin freely. The electrical is disconnected as is the throttle and choke which both seem to be rusted.

I don't think I want to do a frame off resto, but I want to make it look good and run strong. I'm not sure if I will sell it or keep it. If I keep it I wanted to put a tiller on it since I have a 318 for mowing duties.

My question is where should I start? Do I need to pull the motor apart or should I just do an oil change and try to get it running? Do I need to pull the motor off the frame? I think I probably should tear it down some what and power wash off all the muck. What about the rear end? Do I need to service it before I put power to it? As for the throttle and choke cables, I am going to see if I can free them up using some PB blaster and if not, I will replace them.

I am just trying to get any ideas or opinions on what direction I should take. I don't want to damage anything since it hasn't been run in so long. Any advice, opinions, or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh yeah, here are some pics. Enjoy.

First things first. It spins, but does it have compression ?

If it has compression get a heavy dose of Seafoam in through the plug hole and leave it a few days. This will help loosen any stuck rings.

Next , change oil and get fresh fuel to it. I would add Seafoam to both .

Then , make sure the seafoam has cleared the combustion chamber so it doesn't hydrolock, put in a new plug and see if you can get it running.

If it seems to have decent compression check it for spark if not pick up a points and cond. install and adj. and check spark again, get a carb kit and give the carb a good cleaning and rebuid, pull the fuel tank and clean it and remove the petcock and clean the screen out. These basics to get it running will let you know if the engine is tired, trans works ok etc. Best to change the trans. oil after you run it around some but check it first to make sure there is oil in it. Then move on to belts, electrical connections etc. Long process to bring em back but this will get you started. BILL

I'd say give the whole tractor a good looking over, figure out what needs to be done, and put together a parts list.

Check the engine for compression/spark.
Check the fuel tank for rust, drain it and refill with fresh fuel.
Figure out the electrical and fix it.
Drain and refill the transaxle. The old fluid will give you some indication as to wear/maintenance.
Install the engine cover. Cooling airflow is crucial for an air cooled engine.

Thanks for the quick replies. Sounds like fairly easy to make up a check list to and check it off as I go along.

One question about draining and filling the transaxle. Is there a long process of purging the air out of transaxle like there is on the 318? I know they are completely different since the 318 is a hydrostatic trans. I just wanted to make sure I didn't damage the transaxle. Thanks.

The gear transaxle is just a simple drain and refill. Capacity is just under 2 quarts.
