I have a YM146. This is my first diesel tractor and I don't know much about maintaining or fixing it. Yesterday while hauling around some heavy loads of rocks the "low oil" light came on. I noticed oil pooling in the left foot well. This did not look good. When I opened the hood it was clear the oil was coming out on the left side of the engine and from near the top. I noticed a fixture at the top of the engine that looked like it could be the source of the oil. It had an open end that looked like a hose could go over it. I then saw there was a loose hose sitting in the engine compartment. Lo and behold, the hose fit right on top of the thingy. Later in the day I found a parts listing thay says this is called the "Bonnet" and the hose is a "9x 500". The attached photo shows the hose after it was put back on the Bonnet (circled in red). I also attached a screen shot of the parts listing showing the Bonnet and hose (also circled in red).

My question is this: Where does the other end of this hose go? I searched all around the engine compartment withing reach of the end of the hose and could not find where it goes. Since oil is coming out of the Bonnet, it would seem to me the hose should go somewhere!

Thanks in advance for all help!

That is your crankcase vent hose. I just goes to atmosphere. When your tractor is running does a good bit of blow by come out that hose? If so, that is a sign of ring wear. If it has a good bit of blow by it is probably blowing a little oil out also.

The light that came on is the low "oil pressure" light. You do not want to run the engine when that light is on. Quick damage can be done to bearings, etc. It is not an oil level light.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess this means the rings are going since there is a fair amount of oil coming out of the crank case vent. Hope I didn't damage it too much since it ran for 15 minutes or so with the light on...

Is it also just blowing a good bit out the hose? Hopefully, no damage. Have you run it since bringing the oil level up? Did it sound any different?
I put about a third to half a quart of oil in and the light went off. Unfortunately more oil came out of the hose and the light came back on after maybe 15 minutes of run time. Sounds the same to me.

Sounds like it's time to open the engine up and see what's going on. Maybe you'll get ulcky and it will just be a clogged oil return port in the head causing oil to build up in the head and then spill out of the vent. I'm not familiar with your specific engine, but on other engines this could be a possibility.

Loremaster could sure be right. That is the reason I asked if there was a lot of blow by coming out the hose. If so, I doubt it to be stopped up oil passages.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be taking things apart over the long weekend and see what I can find. Never having done this before, would you have any advice for me or any "how to" links I could look over?

Thanks again.

I am still curious about whether you have a lot of blow by coming out the vent tube?? If not you might start by just pulling the valve cover and looking at your oil return passages in the head. I am suspecting you have quite a lot of blowby and if that is the case you will have to pull the head, the pan, etc. in order to remove pistons and re ring. If you have never done this before it will probably be a pretty good undertaking for you. You will need a torque wrench and specs on your engine.

I ran the engine this morning at idle speed. There are little puffs of air coming out of the vent tube that are in synch with the engine timing. Oil light was off for first couple of minutes and then came on. No oil coming out of vent tube, maybe cuz pressure was low? I stopped it once the oil light came on. I'm not sure what would be considered a lot of blow by, what do you think?

Ok mine is nothing like the video, much less than that. I have to get more oil but it seams last time the light came on cuz of oil lost thru the vent - they happened at the same time.

I have read back over all the posts and especially post #5 that indicates after a short run time the oil level dropped drastically. Are you filling it to the full mark on the dip stick? Is it a constant drip, drip when running?

You haven't mentioned exhaust smoke. Do you have much and if so when and what color?

My original addition of oil used up what I had on hand and I did not monitor the levels, but I know it was not enough oil to fill it up. I have a new bottle of oil now so I will fill to the mark tonight and run while watching the vent hose. Based on prior runs i expect to see oil drip put of the hose. I don't recall seeing anything unusual about the exhaust but I will check again tonight.

Ok I finally had some time to work on this and here is what I found:

The oil level was too high. When the oil light came on I thought it meant low level and added what I had on hand. I believe this is what led to the oil coming out of the vent.

I drained the oil and filled up with clean new pilot the top line on the dipstick. No oil is coming out of the vent tube but the oil light remains on.

I think the real problem here is low oil pressure that originally interpreted as low oil level. So what can be done for low oil pressure?

Thanks!

Does the light go out when you increase the engine RPM's?

Low oil pressure at idle is pretty common.

If the light does not go out, I would be installing an after market oil pressure gauge before I tore into the engine.

You need to eliminate the sending unit as a possibility. First check that the wire is hooked to the sending unit and the connection is clean.
Assuming the wire is connected, key on engine not running, disconnect the wire. Does the light go out?. If it does, replace the sending unit.

Essentially, what you have is this:

At low pressure, the diaphragm drops and the contacts close completing the circuit to ground. If the diaphragm goes bad or the contacts stick, your light never goes out.

Or it could be actual low oil pressure.

Hi Ernie,

Thanks for the help. Been out of the country and just got back to this project. I can jiggle the wire that goes to the oil light, and with the key on but engine off I can get the light to go off by moving the wire in back of the light. I have no idea where the sensor is located so I can't try to clean it out. Do you have a diagram that shows where it is? Also, if its bad and needs to be replaced can new or used ones even be found?

Thanks,

SB
