Wheel Horse Engine???

2974 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  tractorpimper1989
My Wheel Horse had its engine changed to a later model engine. I would like to put the original model engine back in it. Can anyone tell me which Kohler was in a RJ58?

Thanks,
Jason

Really??? Nobody can help me???
The B1290 listed as the correct motor for that tractor is a Clinton, but they call it a Kohler. Question is, which is correct?
Thanks for the replies!!! That got me headed in the right direction. I searched the K-91 and it appear to be first used in 1965. I have also seen that it used the Clinton B-1290 OR a Kohler K-90. The article I read said it could have had either. Keep in mind I am NOT a tractor guy. I'm an open wheel race car driver. So this is all new to me. This was my grandfathers tractor that has been sitting dead out back of an A frame shed in northern Wisconsin for the last 30+ years. I just really want to restore it and keep it around because it is so cool. Thanks again for all the help. Now I have to start looking for an engine and some parts.

Now I seen another forum that states late 58 and 59's used a K-91. Now I'm getting confused. The K-91 manual states the first year as "A" and being 1965. I think I am going to look for a K-90.

In 1958, the Ride-Away Jr. used two engines. the main engine was a Clinton B1290. A smaller number were produced with the Kohler K90 engine. They advertised this engine as having 3.6hp. this tractor sold for $399.50 in 1958.

This information comes from a book I have, Straight From The Horse's Mouth, written by Michael A. Martino. He consulted with Cecil E. Pond, the son of the founder of Wheel Horse.

Hope this helps.

Well when the original engine died my grandfather and his brother put in a new used engine. It was a Tecumseh H60-3455. My dad said it originally had a Kohler. Am I going to have a problem finding a good K-90?

Try this guy. He is in Gardners Pa and last year bought several trailers fuil of Wheel Horse parts and tractors from an old dealer. He specializes in old Wheel Horse parts. I have bought several parts from him and he is good to do business with. If he does not have it today, it may come in tomorrow.

I know a salvage yard owner who has a K-91. He's sitting on it though to see what it's worth.
