recheck your number Wheel horse didnt make a 832
if its the cast iron tranny that wheel horse used for ever take the gear shift lever out and line up the blocks down in the hole so the end of the lever will fit into the hole

Au contraire Jerry, Toro made 30 different model 8-32 riders between 1977 and 1993. Most were rear engine riders but all had Peerless transmissions. I know very little about them but here's a manual that should help somewhat with troubleshooting:

You need to take the shifter out and push the sliders back to the middle and put the shifter in the middle and you will be ready to go... You might have a broken or weak detent spring...
but wouldnt it be a 8-32 not a 832 or is a 754 a 7-54 or a 854 a 8-54
but wait my 314-8 is a 3148
dont know any thing about them other brands wheel horse didnt make
