What's that noise?

So,I head out yesterday to take the wife to work...get out on the road and i hear this humming sound...gotta be the boys were messing with the stereo,i figured...got there and the truck wouldnt start...no click,no nothin...pop-start got me home...

turns out the hum was the starter turning for 50-plus miles...the ignition switch hung up and kept the starter turning...so i put a new one in today and was wondering if i should shoot some PB Blaster into the key switch so this doesnt happen again...will it hurt anything in there? its an 84 toyota 22R...no options,no gadgets, bells, whistles, etc.

Unless you enjoy changing starters I'd change that switch.

PB Blaster eats some types of plastics... heck, they even advertise how fast it'll eat a Styrofoam cup on the can! Spraying that into a plastic bodied anything is asking for quick trouble! I'd just replace the faulty switch and be done.

If replacing the swich is beyond your ability or too involved, you could wire up a push button to activate the starter solenoid ,hidden under the dash--then you'll only use the key to turn the ignition "ON" but not to "crank",that will prevent it from getting stuck in the cranking position..plus you'll be able to claim it on your auto insurance as an "anti-theft" device and possibly get a discount...

Maybe it wasn't the switch... Could have been the solenoid...
Yeah, maybe the return spring in it got hung up or the piston in it is rusty and got stuck ..one time my Chevy Blazer starter got stuck in the flywheel teeth after I started it up--I shut it off and crawled under the truck, and found the two screws holding the solenoid fell off,and it was hanging on by a thread, thats why the piston in it got jammed !...had to put new bolts in before it would start again!..

I'm with Kbeitz here. If that starter's been hung up for any length of time, you'll have to unit-replace it. That starter will be turning REALLY FAST when the engine's at road-speed.

Worst/funniest one we ever saw was a young gal with the same make car as yours had driven in from 30 miles away, and she said, "Well, I drove faster, but it kept getting LOUDER!" She'd left it idling in our driveway and we had to shout to be heard over the shriek of that hung-up starter. She had to have a new ring gear along with a starter...

My dads starter got hung up in his toyota tacoma one time. It was on fire before he got to the end of the road.
