Have a neighbor that I cleared snow foe this past winter, nice people, paid me once and made me some cookies for plowing, which is fine.
She came over the other day and said their tractor died while mowing and wanted to borrow the X748. I told that her I would come over and mow for
them but sorry I don't loan out my tractor.
She declined my offer and went home, about 5 min. later the tractor that died
was mowing once again.
What would have said or done?

Jim

EXACTLY what you did, my friend.
:ditto: Ditto. I would have done the same thing. There is only one person I would lend my 318 to. That is my neighbor that understands them as well as I do.

For what you pay for a X7xx series you can't afford to just lend it out to a neighbor or anyone for that matter. It seems rather fishy to me that she wanted to borrow it because hers died but declined your offer to mow it. Sounds almost like they just wanted a fee ride on someone else's mower.........

I think we all would have done the same thing, there is only one person that has access to my stuff. Whatever he uses, comes back cleaner than when it left and usually full of gas. I have offered him use of my truck on several occasions :)

You did the right move !! Only one time has a neighbor asked to cut their grass with my tractor, and that was a 140, but NO ONE but me was to drive that tractor, the previous owner bypassed all safety switches and the reason their tractor was in the shop is because of their great mowing practices, I told him I'd cut his grass for him, he said he'd call back, later that afternoon his bro-in-law showed up w/tractor.:fing32:

We are all in agreement,I wouldn't loan out a $250 string trimmer much less a 12K GT.I learned the hard way years ago when I would loan out a tool it would either not come back or come back broken.
I was just about to add that. I can count on three fingers the number of people I would loan a trimmer, blower or chainsaw to. Much less my garden tractor. And the OP's GT is worth more than both of mine put together.

I am the same with everyone else I don't lend my tractors out to anyone. if you want my tractor I come with it and that even goes for my father that has run tractors all his life. there is only 3 other people that can use them my bil and mother and wife. but we have a small farm that we all work on.

I used to lend my stuff freely but no more. I lent a really nice Snapper rear tine rototiller to my next door neighbor who re-lent without asking me to to another neighbor I didn't know. That neighbor used it to turn over a hundred year old shale stone road that ran through his property. I got my tiller back all busted up and from that point on it was never again.

Thanks for the replies, We are all in agreement, makes feel better.
I didn't want to burn any bridges and I hope they understand.
They still wave when they drive by, so think they're ok with it.
If they get pissy about it they will have to find another way to clear their 1/4 mile drive.

Thanks all
Jim

Wanna borrow my leaf blower? Sure, & I'll hand them a rake:). Stuff is too expensive to loan out & hope it comes back in the same condition it left in. I work too hard to pay for & maintain my stuff to have someone else mess it up. You did the right thing, odd their mower worked after you told them no on borrowing your machine.

The nerve of some people trying to reduce a man's seat time on his tractor by denying him the use of it for their own nefarious purposes. I'm with you! I'll mow it for ya and I'll even help you take yours to the shop for repairs. But you aren't getting any of my seat time on my tractor.
