I recently got a free Troy Bilt XP Horse for free. It has been sitting a couple of years. This thing was horrible, nasty, dirty. Looks like it was never hosed off. Looks like it was literately rode hard and put away wet. Thick grass all over it.

Had to do all the usual to get it running.

When I went to engage the deck the cable broke. Ok. Ordered new cable. Removed deck to install cable. All the linkage/arms that move the pulleys were rusted solid from a thick coat of grass. The whole top of the deck is rusted. I soaked it with PB Blaster and tapped on the brackets to get them to work. But I still had to take everything apart to get it to work right.

So anyway. I got this to flip. What do I do about the rust. I took all the brackets off and power washed it. Do I completely dis-assemble the deck and paint it. Or soak it down with Blaster and move on. Not really wanting to spend a lot of time on this deck.

Please advise. Thanks

CAL: I recommend "1 Step Rust Converter" Available at interstateproducts.com I'm having trouble copying the link. Once you're on the website, look for the link for "rust", near the bottom of the page. About 60 bucks a gallon. Just scrape off the loose scale with a putty knifte and paint it on. Dries to black, but you can paint over it just like you paint over any other primer. No need to sand or wire brush unless you want it smooth. Actually, you're better off with some surface rust to give the product something to bind to. Your rust will be permanently gone. A big time saver. Just get a cheap paint brush that you can toss when you're done. Good luck. Yes, I used it.

CRC Rust Converter. A little goes a loooooonnnnnngggggg way. $25 a quart and likely you will need less than half a cup for the deck. Converts the iron ferrite to iron phosphate and has a black appearance when dry. Takes about an hour to dry and a second coat is recommended.
Have a quarter inch thick welding table outside in the elements here in N. Florida. Did it in January and no sign of rust still.

CRC Rust Converter is what commercial type places use. It may be along the lines of that Evapo-Rust, but I never used that product, so I wouldn't know.

Rustoleum Rust Reformer and Permatex/Duro "Extend" ,and "Nutra-Rust" are all similar products, they convert rust into a flat black coating that repels further rusting..
It goes on looking milky,I think its latex based--then as it dries it turns black after the chemical reaction with the rust is done..

I used the "Extend" stuff on my '81 van years ago on some rusted areas bubbling up around a window rubber,it pitted the metal and made pinholes in it--I used a wire wheel on a drill to get the loose crap off and painted it with the Extend and never topcoated it for years until I painted the whole van over--the spot stayed the same black color and didn't rust at all..

Those things are different that Evapo-Rust or Naval Jelly--those mostly remove the rust using phosphoric acid,it does "convert" the rust to some degree, but the part will re-rust rapidly if its not painted immediately after using that stuff..You can leave the rust converters un-painted if desired..
